Nepenthes clipeata is one of the most endangered Nepenthes species. In 1995, it was believed that only about 15 plants were left in the wild. By 2001, some experts thought there were only 2 to 6 plants remaining. However, a study in 2010 found 260 plants. These plants were scattered across Mount Kelam at heights between 749 and 874 meters. The study noted that most of these plants grew on cliffs that were hard to reach. In 2016, another expedition found only 7 specimens.

The ‘Dracula’ of nepenthes has a complicated relationship with ant species. Ants like to nest between the stalk and the pitcher, and food is provided by the plant via two fang-like points that produce nectar, but when ants go to feed, they often slide off the slippery fangs and are captured in the pitcher.

These bats have evolved super-thin flattened skulls making them able to squeeze themselves outside through the tiny gap entrance of their bamboo home. Once the coast is clear, the bats go hunting for insects, like flies, beetles and winged termites. Bats are the only mammals that can fly, and one of the few to use echolocation to find food; sending out sound waves that detect prey in the darkness.
