Happy Earth Day! The Dryad’s saddle or Cerioporus squamosus, are a mushroom with a beautiful pattern on the top of their cap that looks something like pheasant feathers, a visual example of their other common name: “Pheasant Back”. You could think of them as a cousin to the chicken of the woods and hen of the woods mushrooms. More importantly, they’ll start to fruit in the spring alongside morels, so you’ll often see them around each other. My girls have been begging me to build them a treehouse ever since we moved here 5 years ago. 🌳 Earlier this spring, we walked the property together and scoped out the best spots, weighted the pros and cons of each location, and finally settled on this spot. 🌳 It’s not far from the house, but it’s just over the hill, so you can’t see it from the backyard, it has a great view, plenty of shade, and we used four trees, so there is plenty of room to hang a hammock above it. 🌳 Of course the girls have been involved in every step of the process: how high should it be, what size bolts to use, and holding up the boards while I attach them. I’m proud of them for sticking to their dream and not letting me forget to build it with them.
