(I'm pretty sure that this was mentioned earlier on when they discovered him from Laura's pov... so imagine how she must've felt at that moment, to just have gotten Freddie back and have him snatched away again so soon).
And okay, there's quite a bit going on at the end of the novel- Hans is deathly ill, we know that, and he managed to tell Laura where Freddie is, and he trusts her to get him back from Faland's clutches- but do you think Hans really knew how much he meant to Freddie?
Like, he certainly knows how he himself feels: "We were born together, we died together. I cannot live without you." and he mentioned that the thing keeping him going was his promise to keep Freddie alive; which he more or less accomplished (I forgot if he knew that Laura had rescued Freddie from Faland's hotel).
So with his mission accomplished, he was ready to leave this world, but did he understand that if he died, Freddie may as well be as good as dead too?
