Ten paintings by the German painter Wilhelm Bronner have arrived at La Macchina Fissa this week. They will all go away to be framed and will return for a December exhibition. These important works, spanning a few decades, could not have become part of my personal collection without the generous assistance of Iris Franke, who is managing Bronner's estate. In 1996, Wilhelm Bronner made a series of sixteen or more wooden boxes containing metal angels. Some were naughty. One fat one was entitled Pig Angel. It had stubby wings, a pig snout, and an erect penis. A curvaceous female angel had pointy cone titties and copper wire for wavy "red" hair. There was a resting angel who had hung up her wings to relax in the middle of her box, another was riding a bike, another shooting an arrow. My angel is blind, so pokes her way along with the aid of a stick. Her head is held high and the artist explained that the curls coming out of her mouth were her curses to the gods for her fate. "Red Devil" is a 1999 oil on canvas, wool, papier mache, string, bristles from brushes, chalk, wood and nails composition from the German artist Wilhelm Bronner (1954-2016). Toward the end of the last century, Bronner created many paintings and sculptures of faces, some of the most dramatic for an exhibition in the theatre of his hometown, Augsburg, in 2000.
