The Car The Song
My ringtone jolts me out of my stupor. It’s blaring and I scramble for my phone, blearily cancelling the call. Hopefully my parents haven’t heard it.
Almost as soon as my head hits the pillow, it rings again, and this time I check the time. 2:37 AM.
I try to see the contact name, but my mind is so tired and hellbent on sleep that I just answer, ready to curse out the person on the other side.
“Really, William, it is so rude to cancel other people’s calls.”
Suddenly I’m awake, nerve-endings lighting one by one. Her voice sounds smooth, easy, like she’s been awake for hours and could talk to me for the same amount of time. I breathe deeply, trying to slow my beating heart as it tries to quite literally explode from my chest.
“Are you okay, Will? You better be.” She says, her voice gentler, but still laced with a slight tone of mischief. I nod, immediately cursing in my head when I realize she can’t see that, and breathe out again.
“Y-yeah, I’m good. What’s up, Y/N? Why are you calling so late?”
I can feel her smiling on the other side; I know her that well. She sighs, and I can hear noise in the background. The opening of a car door. The sound of the blinker. I am tired, yes, but definitely not delusional.
“Well, I have been calling you for almost fifteen minutes, Will.”
I physically take the phone from my ear, about to scroll through my missed calls when she speaks up again, “Damn, Will. Just come outside; I wanna go for a drive.”
I sit up immediately, throwing my blanket to the side as I pull on a shirt, frantically searching my bedroom floor for a pair of jeans. Clean your room, William. I can hear my mother’s voice in my head as I pull my pants on over my boxers. She shouldn’t really care; I’m nineteen. I’m just living with my parents because I want to.
I’m out of the house swiftly and quietly, mostly because I know I’ll be stopped if my parents catch me, but also because this is Y/N. She always has a way of making me do stupid, awful, beautiful, crazy things.
She’s leaning on her car, a ratty old scrap of metal that she’s still hopelessly in love with. Her smile grows when she sees me, and I can’t help myself when my arms wrap around her, hugging her close to me. It’d been almost four months since I’d seen her, my stint in China lasting a bit longer than I had intended. I won the competition, though, so I guess it all paid off.
“I missed you, BlueJay.” She whispers as she pulls back from me, and I can promise you her eyes are literally sparkling. I rest my forehead against hers, in the most endearing and not-boyfriend like way possible.
“Missed you too, Y/N.”
She puts her palms to my chest gently, nodding the the passenger side of the car, biting her lip playfully. My stomach quite literally does a backflip as I release her, hurrying onto the other side and entering the car. She sits in the Driver’s seat, amused chatter falling from her lips as she turns the car over.
“Ready for the night of your life, Will?” She smiles, and she doesn’t wait for my answer as she peels out from my driveway. She let’s down all the windows, and I steal glances at her when we pass underneath streetlights. My hand bounces on my thigh, nervous, anxious, until I finally decide to cover her small hand with my own on the stick shift. Her eyes shift down to where our hands are, then up to me, and I can see the slight smile that’s on her lips already.
“God, I missed you.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She swerves in and out of lanes, mindless conversation coming from the both of us as she accelerates down the highway, taking advantage of the lack of cars out at this late hour. My other hand is out the window, feeling the air as we zoom by palm trees and other cars. I feel so present, alive, and with each glance I notice she takes when she thinks I’m not looking, I trip and stumble a little bit more in love with her.
“So, where are we going, Y/N?” My thumb traces circles over hers on the stick. She sticks her tongue out at me as she eases off the accelerator, slowing us down just the tiniest bit. She sneaks a glance at me and busts out laughing, and in kind so do I, because with a girl as beautiful as her, it is impossible not to feel this way.
“You tell me, BlueJay. I’m your chauffeur tonight.”
“Technically it’s morning, but okay.” I chide, and she takes her hand off of the stick for a dangerous few seconds to punch my shoulder before replacing it. My hand falls back to where it was happily.
“Honestly, I could just sit on the side of the road with you and be perfectly happy.” She mumbled, and to be honest, I thought I had misheard her with the way she suddenly fell silent. I nod, pondering, weighing our chances of being stopped by a police officer. It seemed unlikely, with that it was nearing 3:45 in the morning and the highway was almost completely bare, save for a few passing cars, the streetlights, and the millions of stars in the sky.
It occurred to me I was sitting in a car with the brightest of them all.
“Then let’s do that. Pull over.”
She glances at me, huge smile on her lips as she accelerates again, and I can feel her pulse quickening as I grip onto her wrist on the stick. She pulls over to the side of the highway, the breakdown lane completely bare. Y/N cuts the ignition, fiddling with the stick shift before relaxing, both hands poised on the steering wheel.
“You’re so weird.” I chuckle, reaching over and unbuckling her seatbelt. She giggles and turns to face me, bringing one of her legs up to her chest and resting her head on her knee. I do the same, sitting cross-legged on the passenger seat, and for a while that’s all we do. We sit and look at each other, because we’re both not sure when I’ll leave again and for how long. I hated leaving my best friend at home for so long, but right now, underneath the shady metal roof of her car and the streetlights glowing golden on her skin, I don’t have to think about any of that. I can just sit and look at her and it wouldn’t be weird. It is stunning.
“How was China?” She asks, one of her hands picking up one of mine. She plays with my fingers as I tell her about The Voice, the people I met, how much closer I feel to that culture. The other side of me.
“You know,” I begin, looking at our intertwined fingers, my breath catching in my throat, “California...never really felt like home to me.”
She nods like she understands, although I can sense that she doesn’t get it fully. I hold our hands up, studying the way our fingers seem to curl and fit perfectly around each other. I want to stay this way forever. I want to feel this way with her, forever.
“I...I mean, I only started to really love it here when I met you.” I confess, my cheeks reddening. I can feel it, and damn, I am so embarrassed. I can usually push these feelings aside when I hang out with her, but tonight, under the relentless gaze of the streetlights and the eerie peacefulness of the empty highway, I feel like I can tell her everything.
She looks up at me, glassy, watery eyes boring into mine. I want to kiss her so badly.
“D-do you ever feel like,” She begins, shifting in her seat as a tear slipped past her cheek, “like you’re hiding things from people...and you know they won’t care if you tell them, but you’re too scared to tell them still?”
“All the time.” I mutter back, moving forward just slightly. I can hear my heartbeat in my ears as she looks at me again. She opens her mouth to speak, but nothing comes out. I don’t force anything.
“Can I tell you something, Will?” I shudder when she says my name but then I nod, eager, curious. She drops my hand, looking out into the night through the windshield before looking back at me. “I really, really want to kiss you.”
We meet each other halfway, lips brushing together so softly that I can barely feel hers against mine. I make the move, sealing our lips together slowly, gauging her reaction for something wrong. She sighs against my lips, moving hers on my own, and I can feel many years worth of pent-up compassion for her flow through me. She pulls back, breathing heavily, eyes shut tightly.
“I…” My mouth is speaking of it’s own accord. I have nothing to say. I’m not sure if I even want to say anything. She bites her lips as she looks at my own again, and before I can lean back in, because I know that’s what she wants, she’s crawling over the stick shift, falling into my lap unceremoniously. I close my eyes, willing myself to wake up, because this is a dream I’ve had too many times, only to wake up and be bitterly disappointed. Her hands hold mine, intertwining our fingers. I look up at her, breathing slowed almost to a stop because she is so-
“Breathtaking.” She whispers as she stares at me. I can tell in her eyes, she has never seen anything more beautiful than me, and I want more than life to tell her I feel the same way. “Can I kiss you again?”
“Please do.” I mumble, and her lips cover mine in a heartbeat, her hands dropping mine to hold onto my cheeks. Our tongues touch and she moans, her fingers sliding up into my unkempt hair. I skim my fingers up her thighs, resting them gently on her hips as I sit up more, deepening the kiss. The small sounds she makes only make me needier, and suddenly I feel that if I let go of this, if we stop kissing, I’ll die. Everything feels so final when she’s with me.
She pulls away, lips swollen, bitten, and not covered with my own. She closes her eyes and brings one of my hands up to cup her cheek gently. I let her. I have wanted this for too long.
“You gotta be home any time soon?” She whispers as she kisses me quickly again. I chase her lips, a smile spreading across my face.
