maybe mackinnon!reader takes will out to go fishing during one of his breaks, and is a bit hesitant to go bc he thinks it'll be boring, but when they actually go fishing he finds that it's actually very relaxing, and he gets to spend quality time with her away from anything and everything hockey for a few hours
mackinnon!reader masterlist
for a guy who really enjoys golf, will wasn't as excited as mackinnon!reader thought he would be when she asked if he wanted to come fishing with her.
"it seems boring?" she asked, incredulous. "will, you like golf,"
"yeah but golf is like... interesting," he shrugged. "you do things when you golf. fishing is just sitting there waiting for a fish to get hungry,"
she'd rolled her eyes and done her best to explain to her boyfriend that fishing was not just waiting around for fish to get hungry, as he so aptly put it. unfortunately, there's not that much to fishing. to be totally honest, y/n's not quite sure why she likes it so much, she just has fun with it.
a big part of it is that she really likes being outside. she also likes spending time with some of her favorite people on the planet.
fishing provides both of those things.
even though will wasn't super enthused at the idea of fishing, y/n still made him come.
"just try it once," she told him. "if you absolutely hate it, then i'll never make you come with me again. but if you like it, which you will, we can do it more often together!"
will would do anything mackinnon!reader asked of him, even if he hated it, so he agreed.
even though he was anticipating it being really boring, he was still in a good mood. he didn't want to sour his girlfriend's excitement just because he had low expectations for the act of fishing. besides, he was definitely looking forward to spending some time with y/n.
y/n showed him how to set up the fishing pole, how to cast, all that fun stuff. she was pleasantly surprised at how eager he was to learn despite not being very excited about the outing.
as it turned out, they were both right.
technically yes, fishing is just waiting around for a fish to see food conveniently waiting on the top of the water and go up and get it. but also, there was a lot more to it than that.
there were specific spots that were better to cast your line than others. you had to try and reel the fish in at a very specific time or you risked losing it altogether. there was specificity, detail-orientedness that will wasn't expecting.
he was actually having a lot of fun.
and while will discovered that he apparently liked fishing more than he thought, it was more that he was spending time with y/n, away from everything.
will's life revolves around hockey. and so does y/n's life, although to a much lesser extent. being at a lake, fishing, talking about everything and nothing... it was really, really nice.
there was a peacefulness out there. the only thing that mattered was catching a fish, spending time with each other.
y/n laid a few towels out on the sand, and the two of them sat down next to each other. will's arm came to wrap around y/n, and her head rested on his shoulder. he pressed a kiss to her hairline, and they both just sat in silence for a while as they watched their poles for any sign of activity.
will didn't catch any fish that day, but y/n caught a few. she threw them all back, of course, because they weren't there for food, they were there for the experience.
on the drive back, will admitted that he had a lot of fun. y/n kissed him, thanked him for trying it out with her.
will and y/n decided that from then on, fishing was going to be their wind-down activity together. when they both needed some time away from their everyday lives, needed some time together.
y/n managed to convert will into a fishing enjoyer, but will can not convert y/n into a golf enjoyer unfortunately.
You should’ve known something was up the second Will came home grinning like he’d just scored a hat trick, but with mischief in his eyes not victory.
“Hey babe,”
He called, dropping his gym bag by the door.
“Whatcha doing?”
You just stop. Not because of what you were doing but because of how he was looking at you. Like he knew something.
Like he had receipts.
“…Hi,” you said slowly.
“Why are you smiling like that? Will, What did you do?”
He crossed the room and dropped onto the couch next to you with way too much casual energy.
“So, funny thing. One of the guys in the locker room was showing me this fanfiction someone wrote about me. Thought it was hilarious. Kept going on about how this writer got my ‘golden retriever vibes’ spot on.”
Your soul left your body.
Will leaned in, voice low and sing-songy.
“Oh and the username was willsbunnypuck2. Ring a bell?”
You stared at him in horror, mouth slightly open, ears burning, and made a choked noise that might’ve been a denial or a plea for mercy but you weren’t sure which.
“Oh my god,” you whispered, pressing your hands to your face.
“I am going to evaporate.”
Will laughed loud and bright and entirely too delighted.
“Babe,”
He said, tugging your hands gently away from your face.
“You’ve been writing fanfiction about me? You made me the softest, most lovesick, cuddly version of myself and I love it.”
“I wasn’t supposed to be found!” you groaned.
“That blog was private. For me. And like… maybe 300 anonymous strangers on the internet!”
He chuckled and pressed a kiss to your cheek.
“You’re amazing. I was reading this one where I got suspended and you were like, dramatically defending my honor in the press conference. You called me your ‘sunshine soldier.’ Sunshine soldier, baby.”
You wanted the earth to open up and swallow you whole.
“Delete me,” you said into the couch pillow.
Will only pulled you into his lap, holding you with that infuriating grin.
“I just think it’s hot that my girlfriend’s my number one fan. And that she thinks I’m good enough to be a main character.”
“You are a main character,” you muttered against his hoodie.
“You’re a menace.”
“Yeah, but I’m your menace. Sunshine soldier and all.”
You groaned. But you were smiling.
“Fine. But if you ever print those fics out and bring them into the locker room…”
“I won’t,” he promised solemnly.
“Unless you write one where I win the Cup and kiss you on the ice. Then I might frame it.”
