So, the picture of Elyon made me think about W.I.T.C.H. again. It is sad that the fanbase for fanfiction is so relatively small, it is actually an extremely fertile ground for fanfiction. It has a lot of characters, pretty diverse cast, btw, most of them with a lot of promise and well defined personalities, the way the powers work is easily understood and there is a lot of stuff to write about. Whether it is about modern day stuff or about the fantasy elements in the other worlds.
Furthermore, it is ridiculously easy to write crossovers since their powers include dimension hopping or crossing worlds. You could easily have, as I did so many years ago, in a rather badly written attempt, have the Naruto world, for example, be just another world. Same with most other settings.
The difficulty, is a bit in the power balance. As much as I hate that, it is an important part and where I think the story can easily stumble if it is handled wrongly.
There is this post which jokingly refers as to how Spiderman is responsible for NY, Superman for America and so on. Well, the girls of W.I.T.C.H. are the Guardians of Infinity, all the worlds in existence are kinda their responsibility. And it is not their duty to stop petty crime or world devastation or anything. if you read between the lines, the Guardians of Kandrakar are only utilized when someone is endangering multiple worlds and/or realms. World ending threat is too lowkey for them, that’s the responsibility of the individual worlds.
And, well, they kinda have the power to go with that duty. Elemental control, unlimited access to energy to fuel all their magical power, teleportation, creating clones, general sorcery. Then there is the specific stuff like telepathy, hypnotism, absolute control over all technology (which is so horribly broken in any story which has technology more modern than the 1940s, it is not even funny.). Will’s domain is Quintessence, the power of life, which, while translated to lightning and whatever, also means she can RAISE THE FUCKING DEAD. Like NErissa did, if anyone remembers. Fucking brought Cassidy back to life. Sure, Cassidy needed to agree, but with the power of a Heart (which Will has) and her own specialization, she can do so.
And keep in mind, the girls were beginners, they were simply figuring out their powers. (plus, it was a disney kids show, we are not going to see the logical consequences of people who are attacking by lightning, rocks, fire and elements in general. Pretty sure the girls have a body count for their fights in season 1)
So, their control and experience is only going to grow.
The kicker is, they are outmatched by Elyon. While the five girls are fuelled by the Heart of Kandrakaer, Elyon is the Heart/Light of Meridian. Elyon is a reality warper without any limits. She made Taranee’s mouth disappear. Just like that. No illusion, no trick, just, Taranee had no mouth anymore, but she was fine otherwise. And Taranee is a Guardian.
Yeah, how is that, fighting an enemy who can just will your body parts away? Phobos, the big bad of season 2, and his whole army were stopped in seconds by a full powered Elyon.
So, that makes conflict difficult. Elyon is also great friends with the girls, and all of them can teleport and cross dimensions. So, whenever there is trouble the girls can’t handle, Elyon is literally only a few seconds away of bailing them out. (unless there is stuff like jurisdiction with the worlds and Kandrakar stuff, but you’d think when shit hits the fan, it is easier to get forgiveness than ask for permission. Then there is still the fact that most people are unlikely to do anything, when the Hearts of Meridian, Kandrakar and the Earth (lol, Lilian is similarly OP) are united.
Guess the best thing would be not to sweat things and just go with the flow, or concentrate on personal conflict, such as living their lives as normal people while also being on constant call to whatever nightmare emerges. That’s kinda what the comics are, their lives occasionally interrupted by emergencies. Finding boyfriends, dealing with family and school and whatnot.
I am working on a story set in their university years, but don’t have an idea where to go with it, really.
Or, just like with the show, you could explore moral quandaries on what they should and should not do with their powers. is it right to create an Altamere, a fully independant living double who is their own person? Irma’s power is mind control, or suggestion, although it might develop to full blown mindcontrol with more power, how right is that? Irma used it on teachers and her parents, harmlessly, sure, just to get out of lectures but that is still something vile.
How much do they have to obey they law? Furthermore, the Hearts seem to be leaders of their worlds, to one degree or another, how is that going to work with Lillian later on? Are they going to get clean? is Lilian just going to take over? She could, don’t get me wrong, but that’s going to end in disaster.
There is the premise of the third season, with agencies on Earth becoming aware of the girls and trying to spy, but, let’s be honest, they are only a problem as long as W.I.T.C.H. allow them to remain a problem. They have so many powers to deal with them, only their morals really stand in the way. You have security footage? Will can ask the camera to delete it. Will can access every computer, security means nothing to her. They can teleport, control or at least influence minds, Taranee can read minds. So, yeah, governments chances aren’t big there.
I kinda want a Worm crossover but I am not sure how to twitch things so that W.I.T.C.H. doesn’t steamroll the other setting. One idea I had was Taylor ending in the W.I.T.C.H. world after the story had ended, and stumbling upon the girls that way, but again, that is barely a premise.
So yeah, if you want a cool magical girl show, check out W.I.T.C.H. and then write fanfics = P
It has a comic and a cartoon, and honestly, I prefer the cartoon. Season 2 especially is amazing, helmed by Greg Weissman, but the comic is pretty solid as well, although I haven’t read the later volumes. But the characters are seemingly more fun and better handled in the cartoon. I like Caleb a lot more there and Blunk is fun as well. matt as well and the whole Lillian thing is great.
