Logan's Run was released on 23 June 1976.
Attempts to make William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson's 1967 novel into a film began as early as 1969, but the project stalled through numerous rewrites until 1974, when Stanley Greenberg (who had written the screenplay for 1973's Soylent Green) rewrote the script, introducing the concept of "Carrousel" (a device to destroy anyone over the age of 30). David Zelag Goodman was brought on to rewrite Greenberg's script and would receive sole credit.
Jenny Aguttur, William Devane, and Michael York (age 33) were cast, but Devane left to appear in Alfred Hitchcock's Family Plot. Farrah Fawcett-Majors had a small role in the film, but would become a cultural phenomenon when Charlie's Angels premiered on TV in September.
Despite mixed reviews, Logan's Run was a commercial success, and nominated for 3 Academy Awards, including Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography (Ernest Laszlo). L.B. Abbott, Glen Robinson, and Matthew Yuricich received a Special Achievement Award for visual effects.
