Admirals Winfield Scott Schley and William Sampson nurse their wounds from the Schley-Sampson Controversy on the Investigation bench; Spanish Admiral Pascual Cervera, defeated by them in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba, stands nearby, dressed in a fine uniform.
The caption reads “Pick out the Man who was licked.”
Contemporary news accounts relate that Schley and Sampson were fighting in court as each accused the other of failures during the Spanish-American War. The two admirals both claimed credit for the victory in which they defeated the Spanish Admiral Cervera, who had gone on to be greatly honored after the war.
