Episode 15 - Lizzie Bennet is in Denial

What I don't get is why Darcy told Lizzie he was in love with her in episode 60? What could his motivation possibly be? Do you think he went in with the plan of telling her he admired her and asking her to dinner, and the declaration of love just slipped out? Don't get me wrong, I love the episode, but it's always sort of bothered/confused me, and I was wondering if you had any input

I had an ask about this a while ago that I have opened probably ten times and not been able to answer, and every time I look at it, I'm like, I can't answer this until I have a REALLY good answer, but I don't. 

Here is what we know about Darceface at that moment in time: he has demonstrated he's into Lizzie (it's super important; it's good for dancing; Tolstoy vs. Shakespeare) but also that he has no ability to read a room (Lizzie's hostility to him) and an inflated sense of the value of his opinions (list of what makes an accomplished woman please why did you not update that). He's also got the social skills of an agoraphobic lobster according to one of his very b of ffs. So he's a pathetic creature in many regards.

So I can see two possible outcomes that would have occurred to him:

1. Lizzie has been nursing a secret crush on him she's been hiding with hostility and will fall into his arms with relief and mutual attraction/affection when he reveals his own secret pining.

2. Lizzie has not previously considered him a romantic possibility because of how he is so out of her league, but the revelation of his feelings would flatter her so completely that she would if not fall into his arms at least consent to go on a date with him and allow him to woo her into a reciprocal state of attraction/affection when he reveals his secret pining.

He's so clueless at that moment--I mean, the way it's written, it really does feel like he hasn't given any thought to what might happen when he makes his confession other than something positive, which is maybe par for the course with him at that point in his characterization (though part of me genuinely (and meanly) thinks the writers hadn't really considered what might be going through his mind other than a burning desire to confess). To me, he's not written in a way in that episode where it feels like he's really considered anything other than getting his feelings off his chest, but when he says "I can't believe it either", I feel like that's him, in his head, thinking, this is going pretty well! she's speechless! 

At the time I was really pro keeping Darcy off screen that long, and in a lot of ways it's really effective. In that moment in the novel, Austen uses free indirect discourse (my fave) to show that Elizabeth's read on the whole thing is that Darcy comes in expecting to be accepted. This is a great honor he's conferring, she'd be crazy not to say yes, he's such a catch, etc. And that doesn't exactly work in a modern adaptation, so him coming in and being like GUESS WHAT I LOVE YOU HOW GREAT IS THAT without him prefacing it with, I don't know how you feel but I have to tell you this because I'm dying with love for you, makes it really hard to understand what's going through his head other than, if I don't tell her now I'm probably going to die because my heart can't take anymore of this longing lustness I feel. And if that's what's going through his head, it's like he hasn't thought the whole confrontation through, which is not really what that character's about. So we have to do a lot of work as viewers to make that encounter feel really well thought through, and we really shouldn't have to.

So I've been rewatching the Lizzie Bennet Diaries this past week. (The main reason  is because I haven't been able to love Emma the way I did Lizzie. I think part of that is that I'm watching only a little bit at a time of Emma but with Lizzie I came in so late that I was able to fall in love with her immediately. Also, Pride and Prejudice was the very first Jane Austen book I encountered so it's always had a special place in my heart.) I just got to the episode where Darcy proposes and his facial expressions are great. There is some really good acting in that scene.
