Foremost image, fabrics etc. printed onto the canvas, hand drawn lines for hands, faces etc.  

Occasionally something on the surface, over everything else

washy ground, undulating thin sienna

marks for the trees etc. are often not just sitting on the surface, but are on smudges of paint which read as a mid-ground

Immediately thought of this Fred Williams when I settled on a composition; particularly for linking the tropical colours in the upper-half to the more earthly lower section. Journal p. 26
