i think of all of the people downton has lost, dead or alive, that i really miss William the most. he had so much potential development, was such a nice balance between Thomas/Bates, and was growing up in front of our eyes. i get upset that he died often. Mary's interactions with William were some of my favourite - i just think there was so much of his story left. i would trade everyone else if William could have lived! also didn't notice how little Gwen was in series one until this time round!
I'm not ignoring, this, I'm mulling it over and over and thinking about how much William changed for me as the seasons progressed, and then upon rewatch after rewatch.
To be honest, I didn't notice him much at first. Until the scene with Mary & Diamond, because hello, horses. (ask anyone, I can tell you the horses name but never the rider...) And Mary was so sweet to him, I suddenly started to pay attention. Then he was almost creepy/stalkerish in his attention/fixation on Daisy, and I wasn't quite comfortable, and I felt she was forced into a marriage and didn't quite get it. Then the Daisy and Mr. Mason relationship expanded and deepened and we learned more about Daisy and suddenly I'm going, "Oh." I had been seeing so much from what I thought was her POV, but I didn't get it. And neither did she. This is a girl who has never had a family, never known love, of course she is skittish and unsure of it, and going back to rewatch, I suddenly notice William in the first episode and how he is a homesick young man, new to the job, feeling completely lost with no one to look out for him, when clearly he came from a home where all they did was look out for him. It made it hurt so much more everything Thomas did to him. And his starry-eyed love of Daisy all the sweeter. I see that storyline so differently , and OMG YES SO MUCH LOST POTENTIAL!!! OMG, what could have happened with Daisy and him, and Mr. Mason, and the two of them taking over the farm, and WE WOULDN'T HAVE TO PUT UP WITH JIMMY WHO I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE OF HIS CHARACTER OTHER THAN TO GIVE THOMAS SOMETHING TO MASTURBATE TO!! Ugh! I ever will take Alfred back because he seemed to have potential until Ivy & Jimmy came along. Ugh Ugh Ugh.
Oh but sweet William! I am so glad we at least get Daisy & Mr. Mason because it is the sweetest thing to see her suddenly mature and see possibilities for the future.
And GWEN!! I love Gwen! I love Gwen and Sybil together, and in my head-canon, Sybil disses creeper chauffeur guy (face it, Branson was creepy bordering on controlling in S1 & S2), and runs off to York to crash with Gwen a few days before convincing her to join her in being a nurse, and they actually volunteer to go to France and drive ambulances and get into all kinds of crazy adventures.
You are making me miss all the storyline potentials!

just finished s1. so perfect.
Aw, thanks! Going through these caps make me want to rewatch again for reasons... *lays on floor* *cries about otp*
i just wanted to say that the PBS premiere of Downton originally aired as two separate episodes in the UK, i find a lot of people agreeing with you that it was a long episode. i think they /usually/ do combine the first episodes, but i think they could have used a break after Mary emerges in half-mourning to let everyone regroup, and then combine the next two or something. anyway lol.
I watched the first three seasons last year on dvd so this is the first time I’ve actually watched it as it aired. I guess it makes sense why they would combine the first two episode. Extra Downton goodness since we had to wait so long.
willidocarson said:yeah dance bob fosse routines and Michelle got tired and asked how they could get out of it now or something haha.
That was so funny! There needs to be like a blooper reel or something of this season because I feel like it'd be hilarious...
Or like an interview of them together telling stories.
willidocarson said:also he looks like a hobo lol.
