*˖➴ musical theatre was not pearl’s preferred mode of entertainment. it required an emotionality that she found hard to digest; left something sticky, pulsating in the pit of her. and she was loath to sit among a crowd. tonight, however, an exception would have to be made— an exception by the name of liesl, whose actress requested pearl be in attendance. and we must show up for our students, or so she was once lectured. but there was an issue. “ no. no, no. ” the doors appeared to be locked.
she pushes once, twice again, but they refuse to budge. through the glass, she can see the foyer— empty, though its lights were on. was she at the wrong entrance? or, had she gotten her dates mixed up? had the show long since started, and she was simply too late? pearl tries to focus her hearing, so that she might glean any wisp of melody, but— nothing. “ … hello? ” feeble in her query, but she did not like to raise her voice. and so, unsure of her next course, she stands there. gawkily. alone.
