something is wrong with him (lovingly)
dahlia's laughter came easily, bright enough to fill the room before the mariachi musicians behind her quietly busied themselves unpacking instruments. " i'm afraid your father isn't alone, " she admitted with an amused shake of her head. " my own still looks at me like i'm twelve whenever i walk through the front door. i suppose that's just the curse of having parents who love us a little too much. "
she accepted the embrace without hesitation, squeezing ollie's shoulders before stepping back to admire her properly. " of course i remember you. " there was no celebrity polish to the words, only sincerity. " you were always hiding somewhere in the studio. under the piano, behind the sound booth, stealing everyone's attention when we were supposed to be working. " her smile grew more nostalgic. " your dad used to apologize for bringing you along, and i'd tell him i was haknowingppier there was at least one honest person in the room. " she laughed softly. " recording studios are full of people who nod along to everything. children don't do that. "
at the mention of her father calling, dahlia grinned. " well, tell him i'd be disappointed if he didn't. i owe him more than one phone call after so many years. " there was a faint apology tucked beneath the joke, gone almost as quickly as it appeared. " and yes, " she answered, glancing toward the windows where the evening sun had begun to settle over willow glen. " i moved back a month or so ago? i spent a long time convincing myself home was wherever the next tour stopped. " she smiled to herself before looking back at ollie. " turns out home has a funny way of waiting for you. besides... " her expression softened into something unmistakably fond. " there's something comforting about hearing people call me dolly again. nobody in nashville ever dared. "
" sometimes i think my dad wished i did ⸺ i swear he would've started putting tape over my mouth if i hadn't learned how to keep my comments to myself , " had always had strong feelings towards music even in her childhood , memories such as the ones dahlia reminds her of made it no wonder that she'd ended up exactly where she was . " don't tell anyone . . . but i remember i used to beg him to take me when i knew he was going to see you , i loved watching you guys work more than anyone , always felt like you guys were tapped into something that was beyond anything my little nine year old brain could understand , " still felt a fond it towards it , the kind of magic that came with making music , always knew it was an honor to be a part of the process .
" it's only been a month ? does it feel good to be back ? " had always wondered if people on the road as much as her ever got homesick , especially for a place like this , even years after moving here herself still found herself missing sand and sunny skies only california could ever be able to provide . " oh ⸺ sorry , was i not supposed to call you that ? i honestly can't even remember my dad calling you anything else , it felt . . . like , weird , " name in it's full effects felt more suited to the fame that followed the woman on the billboards than the one standing in front of her right now , the one that felt like a friend . " what was it like in nashville ? " question is asked as slow steps guide her towards a table that seemed to be set up for a dinner fit for the kind of entertainment dahlia was best at , two of the chairs pulled from underneath the cloth so they could sit while they caught up . " i thought that was , like , the place to be for all the country stars . . . did it get exhausting after a while or were you just missing the quiet life ? "
⋆ ⋆ ⋆ della made a point not to spend much time at the country club — the place reminded her too much of the banquets and dinners and schmoozing she'd had to do when on her olympic run. she was here for a good purpose, though — the spa. never in her life had she felt like she needed a massage more than now, stress and confusion clouding her mind and tensing her muscles to the point she was waking up achy and head throbbing. she'd made a point not to come in fancy country club attire, the sound of her flip flops echoing in the halls as she padded towards the spa's entrance. piano music slowed her steps, the tune familiar in a way she couldn't place and, being both curious and definitely nosy, she followed the sound to an empty banquet hall, ollie sitting at the keys in what seemed to be a musician's trance ( not something della was personally familiar with, but something she could appreciate when witnessing it ). she leaned against the doorway, smiling at how serene ollie looked, like she belonged there. startling at the same time, della let out a small yelp at the loud discordant note, following it with a laugh. ❛ did who send me ? darlin', i'm nobody's errand girl. 'sides, ❜ she said, making her way across the room, dropping her bag by the foot of the piano. ❛ i'm the last person who'd discourage you from breakin' the rules. now, scoot — i want you to teach me how to play somethin'. right now my repertoire is limited to twinkle twinkle and three blind mice. ❜
sound of della's voice alone is enough to loosen the knot that briefly sat tight in her chest , immediately absolved from the overwhelming guilt she'd felt intruding on a space that wasn't hers . " hey , are you stalking me ? " playful tease comes practically immediately , features growing with a smile she was sure della had come to know well . " well don't you look awfully cozy , " she says , giggling at the way della's feet flip and flop through the empty banquet hall , echoing with each step she takes closer to the piano . room is immediately made for della to sit on the bench as soon as she's close enough , fingers absentmindedly pressing notes on the keys to the tune of adele's someone like you , her usual warm up song of choice .
" twinkle twinkle and three blind mice ? what the hell do you need me for then ? " laughs , lips pursing as she reminds herself of the kinds of songs she'd leaned towards during lessons she taught to the younger kids . " what about chopsticks ? do you know that one ? it's a duet , the kids love it , " she seems perhaps a little too excited , hands already reaching to guide della's fingers to the keys , " it's easy , it's the same notes over and over again pretty much , look . . . " she waits for della's gaze to move to her fingers before beginning the song , pressing the notes slowly so it would be easy to watch . " start here , and go one , two , three , four , five , six , one , two , three , four , five six , " cadence and tone of her voice make it obvious this is something she's taught before , her own hand playing the accompanying notes until the first few measures of the song are over . " i love teaching that one ⸺ it's the first song i ever learned how to play on the piano . . . i used to have one of those little yamaha keyboards that lit up to show you where to press , " ⸺ " did you play anything growing up or were you mostly just a horse girl ? " said with affection , always .
leave it to jennie to somehow get lost in the sprawling country club, feeling as though she'd gone down this same hallway twice already. the agent is pretty sure her workout class has been missed now, but at least it was her one free one before she'd accrue a charge. jennie supposes it's not an entire loss, but it did mean that soft pink alo set had gone to waste. well, maybe not entirely if she founds some errands to run. jennie gives up on her search with a quiet but frustrated groan, resisting the urge to stomp her foot before recentering herself. the last thing she needs is for someone to think she's gone insane. it's then that her ear catches the distant sound of a piano being played and she follows the sound, curiosity getting the best of her. jennie peaks into the room once she finds the source of the sound, standing up on her toes to look through the small window. of course it doesn't take very long for her to make a fool of herself, realizing that the door is absolutely not secure when she leans her weight against it, then she's crashing through. " oh shit— ! " jennie catches her footing and stands to full height, shaking her hair off of her shoulders. " sorry, no. oh my god. " the agent waves her hands then, not dismissing in any way, but an effort to not come off as a total fool. " no, god no ! i, er— i got lost trying to find some yoga class and i heard you playing. i didn't mean to intrude. "
it's a rare sort of comfort to see that she's not the only one who finds herself struck by her own clumsiness in the worst possible situations . first instinct is to rise from her chair , a hand reached out like that'd help the girl who'd been bested by gravity a few feet away from her . " oh god ⸺ are you okay ? " worlds tumble directly over the other's laugh escaping as their sentences collide in mid air . " oh no , no , not at all . . . i was just killing some time before my pilates class in a few minutes ⸺ saw the piano sitting in here and couldn't help myself , " hand that was once extended now motions towards the grand piano , swiping an invisible patch of dust from the top . " by the looks of it i think you and i might be going to the same thing ? that set is so cute , i almost bought it when the blue was in season but i missed the sale and couldn't bring myself to spend that much on a bra and leggings , " funny she should say that , though . her own body adorned with matching two piece navy blue set from lululemon . giggle escapes when she realizes , gaze dropping to her clothes , " okay . . . to be fair i got this from the outlet , two for one , so basically it was free , " girl math , right ? " i'm ollie ⸺ you look sort of familiar . . . i know this is gonna sound a little strange but , do i know you from somewhere ? "
frequenting the country club was a part of june’s routine. did he actually have one ? absolutely not. but no one has to know that. he is here every other day, and somehow, he hasn’t dropped dead of how fucking BORING it was. june was in dire of need of something new in his life. the sound of the piano low-key captivated him. surprisingly, the melody was a lot closer than he thought. now a few yards from the person who was playing the piano . . . and a beautiful song at that. his focus wasn’t entirely on her, however; june was on his mobile device, so lost in a tsunami of his thoughts. the sour note brought him back to reality, and he was just as startled as she was. the former skater flinched out of his skin; a soft laugh produced from his mouth, waving his hand dismissively. “ oh gosh, no— i mean, sure, ya scared the hell outta me, but i’m sure you reacted just the same, ” he clears his throat, and proceeded to apologize, “ i’m so sorry — and no, i don’t even work here to kick you out. but for what ? playing the piano ? ”
can't help but let a soft laugh escape her lips , seemingly both afraid of one another's presence despite the fact that they were in a very public space . " i scare easy so . . . when i saw you out of the corner of my eye i don't know what the hell i thought , i think my first instinct is always to assume i'm in trouble for something , " admits , head shaking as fabric of her skirt is used to swipe the sweat from her hands . " i'm definitely not supposed to be playing this piano just at my own free will , so . . . i don't know ! maybe you booked this room and needed to come set up in here for something , " could truthfully come up with a list of reasons why someone might be here to remove her from the premises , but thought maybe it best not to give anyone who might be listening any ideas . " were you off to go play some golf ? or just wandering around the club looking for something to do ? it's so quiet here today . . . i think the heat's scared everybody into their homes but sometimes i honestly feel like the heat makes me want to go outside more . . . like the sun is so bright it's begging me to come out and enjoy it ⸺ or maybe i'm just a lizard , the jury's still out on that one , " she teases .
helena can't help but smile at ollie's antics — always so whimsical in her childlike mannerisms, despite the fact that she's already thirty. helena often feels as though she's older than ollie in most ways, from how she carries herself and the way she behaves in certain situations. that's not to say that helena looks down on ollie; in fact, it's the opposite — it makes her curious as to what it would feel like to be a kid again. helena has never been the kind of person to dwell on the past … but every once in a while, she quietly wonders how different she would have turned out if the world's cruelties hadn't made her mature so quickly. ollie is one of the few people that reminds her that there was a time in her younger years that wasn't so bad, before the anger and darkness consumed her. ❝ exactly, you're not taking the white ones because you're such a klutz, and also because i saw it first so it's mine, ❞ helena affirms, a faint teasing lilt behind her words. she nods at ollie's suggestion. ❝ of course. can i come too or is it an invite-only thing ? ❞ she doesn't wait for an answer, heading towards the cashier to pay, knowing ollie would follow right behind. ❝ were you thinking of any restaurant in particular ? i've been craving a matcha for days now and that new cafe downstairs looks so cute ! ❞
" of course you can come , " ollie's words are rushed from her mouth the second she notices helena striding towards the cash register , feet scurrying not too far behind . " oh you know me , i'll eat anything ⸺ a matcha actually sounds delicious right now , i saw this one on tik tok that was some , like , matcha honey cloud thing with the cold foam top you know ? i don't remember exactly what it was but i know i bookmarked it so it has to be good , " she says , phone slipped from her back pocket to dig through her saves , eyes alight as she turns the screen towards her friend . " aha ⸺ look , it's at the one downstairs ! i think they have a good brunch too . . . no better way to wrap up shopping than with some twelve dollar artisanal toast , right ? " she teases , thanking the cashier after her transaction before slinging the shopping bag over her shoulder . " but yea back to before , please come , i need a friendly face in the audience plus i'm pretty sure you're , like , their target demographic , " people with deeper pockets than her own . " did you have to go to a lot of stuff like that while you were more into acting ? i remember when i was scoring all of those movies in 2023 i went to a bunch of those fancy galas and fundraisers and stuff . . . sometimes they're nice but everything always feels so . . . like , posed , you know ? but they're great for people watching , and that's exactly why i love going to the country club all the time . "
harley's eyes went comically wide as the can detonated, sprite spraying across the front of his shirt, the picnic table, and, most tragically, beau jr. there was a beat of silence. then he looked down at the gecko. beau jr. blinked once. harley gasped. " … my son. " he scooped the little lizard into his hands with all the dramatic urgency of someone cradling a wounded soldier. " beau jr., stay with me! tell me who did this to you? " the gecko, thoroughly unfazed, simply licked one of his own eyeballs. harley let the act linger for another second before a laugh broke through, bright enough to erase any chance of her feeling guilty. " i'm kidding, " he said, accepting a few of the napkins she offered. " he actually smells kinda refreshing now. " he dabbed absentmindedly at the front of his shirt before waving the whole thing off. " seriously, don't worry about it. i've seen people react way worse. " his grin returned in full force. " one guy screamed. like... horror movie screamed. you'd think beau jr. had popped out holding a knife. " glancing down at the gecko perched comfortably in his palm, he scratched lightly beneath the tiny reptile's chin. " he's not offended. are you, buddy? " beau jr. continued existing with the emotional range of a decorative rock. " see? forgiveness. "
at her question, harley chuckled. " pretty much always. " he shrugged like carrying reptiles in his shirt was the most ordinary thing in the world. " he likes it in there. warm, dark, free transportation. honestly, he's got a better setup than most people. " he tucked beau jr. back beneath the collar of his shirt, leaving only the tiny head peeking out once more. " plus, " he added with a crooked smile, " it's a fantastic conversation starter. " his eyes flicked to the now soda-soaked hot dog mournfully resting on the ground. " ...can't say the same for your lunch, though. " he hopped off the picnic table and nodded toward one of the nearby food tents. " c'mon. let me replace it. i think beau jr. owes you one for the heart attack. " he glanced down at the gecko. " right? " another blink. " he said yes. "
she's relieved to see he's taken it in jest , beginnings of a smile blooming across red dusted cheeks as he assures her both himself and his son took her scare with stride . " i thought lizards like that were supposed to stay in those little , like , terrarium things ? you know , with the heating lamps and stuff ? " questioned , sure , she's seen some strange animals in this town , but can't recall a time someone's ever been carrying around a lizard with the same kind of casualness one would afford a dog . eyes fall to the floor just as his did , pout pushing out her bottom lip at the splatters of ketchup and mustard left to stain the concrete due to her fallen lunch . " it's alright , i'm sure there's a stray cat who'll be enjoying that come nightfall , " she insists , picking up the rest of her mess and tossing it in a nearby trash .
lips immediately part to tell him he doesn't have to do that , shouldn't feel the need to replace the thing that she'd so clumsily destroyed but the growl that twists her stomach makes is offer one that's increasingly hard to refuse . " well isn't he a gentleman ⸺ next time i see him i'll bring him some flies to make up for the trouble , " steps have already begun to lead them in the direction which harley's head had nodded , weaving through small crowds of people pooled together at their trucks of choice , eyes wandering the scene for something she might like to eat . " i know the whole point of this thing is to taste all the brisket but that's , like , the one barbecue food i could just never get behind , " she huffs , arms folded as she stops in front of the stand where she'd originally acquired her fallen dog . " are you hungry ? maybe we can get a couple things and try them and do a little judging of our own ⸺ i feel like part of the reason i don't like brisket is i just haven't had the right one . . . but we have to get sides too , maybe multiples . . . i wanna see who's mac and cheese is the best , " . . . " but here's the real question : breadcrumbs , or no breadcrumbs ? "
🎠 SETTING: cowboy karaoke @ franks, like, 10pm. 🤠 PARTNER: you + 2/4.
HE'S TAPPING AGAINST THE BAR COUNTER, all sorts of anxious bundles mending together in the pit of his stomach, like he's the new kid at a new school. it's awful. the crowd has slowly filtered out, noticeable by the sound of cowboy boots against the floor becoming less and less and the sound of drunken droning on the microphones slowly turned off. it was funny for a bit; watching people sloppy and having fun without a care in the world for at least one chappell roan song. glances at the menu before turning to the person next to him, “if you had to pick one drink — which is it?” it seems like a solid ice breaker. fraser is just kind of lonely, that's all. “want to try their best stuff first, need some recommendations before i settle on somethin'.”
aria's just about had it , feet finally given some much needed relief after she'd spent most of the night stomping through frank's with a vengeance . karaoke was no joke , and especially not when drunk , already knew tomorrow she'd be regretting the extent of her performances as tickle in her throat starts to grow more coarse with each passing second . but , she won't let it soil her night , perched on one of the barstools as she waits for a bartender to become free enough to flag down for her order when a voice speaks up next to her . attention turns quickly , giving him a once over like she had to get a good look order to give a good suggestion . " depends what you like . . . i will never , ever recommend a beer to anyone but for some reason men like that so you could always start there ? but i usually go for the whiskey sour ⸺ or you could go the more direct route and just get some shots , but something tells me you don't hold your liquor very well , " teases , hoping to lighten the tension that seems to keep his shoulders taught . " you don't have a go - to drink when you go out ? like , a tried and true ? "
jojo lets out a quiet laugh through her nose, shaking her head as amara makes her case. simon cowell-ing her. dramatic. she has to give her credit for the creativity, even if the comparison is painfully accurate. “you know, for someone who just performed a full emotional exorcism on stage, you're surprisingly concerned about criticism. ” there's no real bite behind it. if anything, there's amusement tucked beneath the dry delivery. jojo had always been better at pretending she wasn't entertained than actually hiding it. outside, the cool air is a welcome contrast to the warmth of the bar. she listens as amara debates the importance of a chicken quesadilla like it's a matter of national security, eyes drifting briefly toward the truck. " tragic, " jojo mutters. “ one karaoke performance and suddenly we're negotiating nutritional requirements. ” but she follows anyway , because of course she does.
when amara starts talking about paying, jojo just looks at her for a moment. the kind of look that says she can't believe this is even a conversation. then she pulls the cigarette from between her lips, holding it loosely as she reaches into her bag for her wallet. “ absolutely not. ” before amara can argue, jojo has already stepped up to the window, cigarette hanging from the corner of her mouth as she pulls out her card and hands it over to the employee. " she's getting the quesadilla, " she says, nodding toward amara. “ and whatever she wants to pretend is a reasonable amount of food. ” a beat. “ and i'll get something later .” she ignores the inevitable protest, tapping her card against the reader. “ you bought enough drinks with your dignity tonight. let me handle dinner. ” the smallest smirk appears as she takes the receipt. " besides, " she adds, glancing back at her, " i'm pretty sure i just saved you from a second round of watered-down margaritas. technically, i'm the hero here. "
she's lucky amara's too drunk to argue , was never below being the kind of annoying patron that practically fought with their friends over who's card got put down on the tab but right now all she can think about is the taste of pollo asado melting on her tongue . " hey . . . i don't like that hit to my dignity you're implying after i just gave the performance of a lifetime up there ⸺ the real simon would've given me the golden ticket . . . or the golden microphone or whatever the hell that thing was called , " huffs , hadn't realized she'd had such a fondness for american idol until she finds it hard to get herself to stop bringing it up . they really don't make tv like that anymore .
before jojo has a chance to tuck the receipt away , strip of thermal paper is snatched from her hands , quick to pull her phone from her back pocket and snap an incredibly blurry photo of the total so she could find a way to reimburse her friend at a later date . " if you get a zelle from me tomorrow i don't wanna hear it . . . you can use it to buy yourself some more of those death sticks , " head nods towards the cigarette burning between jojo's fingers , had never understood why people still smoked on purpose , but to each their own . " okay , you know what , i'll give you the point for that because i did very briefly think one of those pineapple margaritas sounded really good right now but i stopped myself , aren't you proud ? " asks , but by the sounds of it , amara sure is . she doesn't order anything else , knew the quesadilla would be more than enough food and instead lets herself wander off to a pitcher of water that sat next to the truck , filling a styrofoam cup to the brim and bringing it to her lips for a sip , spillage leaking onto her top in the process . " either you hold your liquor really well or you had , like , significantly less to drink than i did ⸺ which i kind of find hard to believe with all those beer bottles somebody left lingering across the table , " . . . " god , please don't let me go home until i'm sober ⸺ i do not need my husband seeing me like this . "
teddy practically makes himself at home when they come into ollie's home, shoes kicked off near the door and keys tossed onto the table as if it were second nature. " uuuuggghhh, one second could be an eternity ! " teddy complains, feet carrying them through the woman's home while following the sound of her voice. the scent of ollie's shampoo is still lingering in the air while continuing to pick through her drawers. their brow lifts when she pocks her head of the bathroom. " of course i am. " their nose crinkles. " i told you what my plan was before i got here. "
they don't have intend on giving up their search until hand lands on the silky material. " aha ! " he blurts out obnoxiously, pulling the cheetah printed bonnet from the drawer. " i knew i'd find it. " teddy wouldn't be teddy if he didn't fully take in ollie's appearance, eyes raking from her bare legs to how her frame is swallowed his shirt. he hums with a low sound of approval, but tries not to come off entirely like a dog. " woof. " teddy naturally reaches up to brush their fingers through their curls. " ohh, you like my hair, huh ? " their hands settle on her hips, taking full advantage of the minimal space between them. their nose crinkles for a brief moment as if thinking, but it doesn't last for very long. " as much as i'd love to bury my face in an extremely heavenly place, i came over with a job to complete. you did hire me for a job, after all. "
she can feel his eyes raking up her figure despite the lack thereof , loose fabric of their shirt completely covering any semblance of curvature she might have had yet still he looked like he wanted to devour her anyways . " i should considering i'm the one responsible for it , " proudly claims it too , though playful nature is easily sidetracked by the feeling of his hands settling at the dip of her hips . arms quickly find themselves snaked around his neck , close enough to him now that she truly had no option but to look up at him as he spoke . " i wasn't talking about that , silly . . . if i let you do that first my hair would be matted come morning , " thumb strokes against the skin on the back of his neck as she speaks , gaze softened , bottom lip just barely stuck out with a pout , " but i'm gonna need a little something to hold me over . . . " says , gaze briefly dropping to their lips , lingering for a second longer than she would've preferred before eyes bring themselves back to meet his , " . . . otherwise we both might end up getting distracted , " head tilts up just enough to let her nose brush against theirs , lips pressed against his with a ghost of a kiss , weight shifting to the tips of her toes , " please ? "
it had been a long time, entirely too long, since gianna laid her eyes on aria. as the youngest into their trio, the attorney was well aware that she wouldn't always be able to catch aria, but there was something about this time that really made her heart sink. their friendship was one that gianna holds close to her heart and was surprised when she discovered that the younger had skipped across the ocean. a part of her knew there was a reason behind it and not just a random vacation, so she didn't pry. she just waited until aria returned and now, she wasn't going to let her out of her sight.
" look at me ? look at you ! " her arms envelope aria as if she were going to disappear, squeezing her as tight as the dump between them will let her. she steps back after a moment and lets her hands gently squeeze the younger woman's arms. she laughs at aria's jest, shaking her head. " it's still so hard to believe, " gianna hums. " i thought we were just going on vacation, not celebrating a honeymoon for the second half of the week. " gianna pushes her sunglasses to the top of her head and motions for them to sit on a nearby bench. " oh my god, don't cry ! if you cry then i definitely will start, too. god, i got teary eyed while making stroller comparisons the other day. i haven't felt more ridiculous in my entire life. "
gianna listens, for a brief moment letting her lips purse slightly when hearing aria's words. her shoulders soften while she reaches to take aria's hands in her own. " you know you're welcome to our house whenever you want to come by. you could come by at like, three in the morning and there's a high chance i might be awake. merrick's the one who sleeps before eleven. " she hopes a little humor helps to relieve whatever tension that she can tell is beginning to creep into the line of aria's shoulders. " i might be having a baby, but you'll always be like my first kid. i hope you know that. " gianna loved aria as more than just a friend, almost as the little sister she never got to experience. she smiles while lifting her hand, wedding ring glimmering under the sunlight. " it's still so surreal, aria. two giant milestones happened within a week and i still haven't managed to wrap my head around it. god, his taste is impeccable ! "
" ugh , oh my god look at you , making stroller comparisons . . . i can't believe you're really going to be someone's mum , " and was already well suited to it too . hand waves the air between them at the invitation , feeling welcomed was never an issue , always knew she would be , and perhaps that was where the true root of her insecurity had buried itself . aria was always one to care too much about distance , to worry about being too close , chronically horrified of overstaying her welcome in a room that no longer had space for her in it . but the thought is quickly swiped from her mind , smile creeping across her features as hand reaches down to give gianna's a squeeze . " hey , i'll gladly give up my title of first born to this little fish but i can't promise i won't be treating it like my own little brother , " she teases , eyebrows furrowing as gaze drops to gianna's bump before flicking back up at her , " or sister . . . " she says , letting it hang just in case gianna hadn't been quite ready to let that card leave her chest just yet .
palm is taken in hers the second gianna extends her hand , pad of her thumb smoothing over the shimmering stone that rested on her ring finger , " fuck , gi . . . it's beautiful , " she swoons , shifting her hand just enough to let the rock catch the sunlight . " you know , my mum is going to fucking murder him if she finds out she didn't make this ring . . . but maybe for your wedding bands ? she always wants to do something custom for family ⸺ i'm pretty sure she's had my entire wedding stack designed since i was , like , ten years old , " would have to find the sketches somewhere , though not that she'd be needing them any time soon . " are you guys going to have a bigger wedding with the whole nine yards or was this a one and done with the elopement ⸺ which , by the way , i'm being so brave for not being mad at you for , please tell me you have photos of what you wore . " yeah , let me see your room . why — you embarrassed ? got one direction posters on the ceiling above your bed or something ? " he catches the look on her face , the way her lips push out just enough that he knows exactly what she’s asking for . a quiet laugh leaves him but he obliges , stoops to press a gentle peck to her lips before glancing over his shoulder out the window , his eyes find her father's already watching them , smiling . heat creeps across his cheeks as he turns back to aria , nodding toward the staircase . " come on , nerd . let's go see your room . " the warning he gets when they reach her room leaves him grinning , beyond intrigued to see the space she's kept locked away from him . he wasn't sure what he expected , but still he's surprised . " woah . . . " he comments , strolling leisurely through the room . " . . . it's like a library in here . you weren't kidding when you said you were a dork . . . nothin' wrong with bein' studious , though . " he adds quickly , wants her to know he's not judging . if anything , it's exactly in line with who he knows her to be — intelligent , obsessive , intentional , particular . everything . " s'not messy , " he hums , reassuring . he wishes he had an easier time reading — it comes as naturally to her as breathing , while brooks struggles through the comics . sometimes , somewhere between taking a valium to knock him out and the sweet relief of sleep , he tells himself this is just one of the reasons he can't make a move , that she's the brightest person he knows and he can't even get through an obituary . in short , she's everything , and he's . . . him .
he can't believe he'd overlooked her in high school , had somehow been so distracted with whatever bullshit he'd been up to that he'd missed her right up until partway through college . he’s spent so much time knowing aria as she is now — the woman who effortlessly owns any room she walks into , the woman who challenges him , who calls him out , who slipped past his every defence like he ever stood a chance . but he can’t help wondering what pieces of her existed before him , parts she kept tucked away .
he's barely turned back to her when the sweater is shoved over his head , momentarily disoriented before she kisses him , hands finding her cheeks to hold her there a moment . but the usual intensity with which he kisses her is tempered , in part by the knowledge her father could walk in at any moment , but moreso by the cold dread that has his stomach in a vice . he knows if he confesses how he feels , it's nearly certain she'll feel the same . he knows she doesn't like the limbo he's kept her in , had even asked for space from him because of it . the distance felt to brooks like someone had died , when really he hadn't been able to text his friend for twenty four hours . it'd be the biggest wakeup call of his life . but that's what makes it so hard — there is far too much at stake , and he doesn't trust himself enough to not fuck it up like everyone expects him to .
‘ she’s not going to wait around forever , you know , ’ her father had told him directly . he had known that . . . and it terrified him . more than him letting her in only for her to dislike what she finds , more than losing momentum in his career and amounting to nothing , more than anything . . . he's scared of never finding out . of ' what if ? ' the thought of her falling in love with someone else makes him feel physically ill . the way she looks at him now , so tender and concerned , has brooks feeling like an animal in fight or flight . " yeah — i'm fine , " but there's no heart in it . " just — thinking . "
he's fucking petrified . for a six foot five man who solves eight figure problems with quiet confidence , all smooth words and expensive suits , whose name says more about him than he ever could . . . his kryptonite comes in the form of the girl he's been fumbling for the past few years . perhaps this was news only to him .
" just , your dad said something — " his voice cracks like a pubescent teenager , a sound halfway between a cough and a laugh clearing his throat , has a hard time meeting her eyes " damn . uh — yeah , i don't know . . . he said , like , somethin' about how this whole . . . friends song n' dance isn't going to work long - term . like , you're not gonna sit around waiting for me forever , y'know ? and it made me think about how , like . . . " he huffs a hard sigh , scrubs a hand down his face , backs up to lean against the nearest bookcase flanking the wall and forces his hands into his pockets .
" like , when you went to london ? it made me have to live life without you . that's what i'd feel like if you decide i'm not worth this wishy - washy bullshit anymore and find some other guy to be with . n' just the idea of it pissed me off . no , not pissed off — it terrified me . i was sick torturing myself just thinking about it . " he risks a glance up at her before his gaze returns to the corner of her suitcase on the bed . " and , for the record , i'm not scared of making it official . or choosing you . that's not the problem at all . the problem is that i'm done for . for life . you're it for me , aria , " he chuckles desperately , a tense shrug , " but if we date , and then you realize you don't like what you find . . . and then you leave me ? god , i won't ever recover , honest . and i know you've probably , like , heard rumors and things about me . . . n' some of 'em are true . . . " he knows his reputation around town , haunted by the actions of a boy in his early twenties , all bravado and expensive suits , poor decisions and burned bridges . " there's a laundry list of people who don't like me . for good reason , i guess . i've fucked up a lot . like , done shitty things to people who didn't deserve it because — well , for no good reason . " when did a sweet backyard barbecue turn into him airing his dirty laundry to the person he's the most afraid will judge it ?
" anyway ‚ fuck — sorry this is like , getting weird now . " he laughs uncomfortably , shifts his weight awkwardly . he finally actually looks at her , any shred of confidence gone , his features written with embarrassment , worry , shame . " yeah , guess i'm nervous . i want to be together , the real way . i don't want you to have to keep waiting around for me to get my shit together . you're too important to me . " he wants to say more but suddenly feels his throat constrict , wonders if it's divine interference preventing him from saying too much without getting a gauge on how she feels . he tries to swallow , but the lump in his throat makes it difficult . " but i also don't want to ruin our friendship , 'cause i think you're my best friend . n' i , like . . . " he's so close to saying it , three words on his tongue that simultaneously feel locked in the vault buried deep in his chest . " sorry , i've been rambling . wh — what're you thinking ? "
she'd known something was off , not necessarily wrong , but the look in his eyes always gave him away . he seems distracted in a way she's never quite seen , like his mind is tucked into some far off place that she either couldn't reach or had been kept out of for reasons beyond her understanding . that was always the game she played with brooks , the push , the pull , the delicate dance that even after a decade they still hadn't mastered the footwork of . just thinking , he'd said , but she'd already known it was more .
hands move themselves from their place near his skin , can already feel herself shrinking into a shell not dissimilar to the one she'd lived in when this room was her home . the more he speaks , the more her stomach twists itself in a knot she's not sure she'll ever be able to get undone . this couldn't be happening , not now , not here , and certainly not at the hands of her father . " brooks , please don't do this , " had already prepared herself for the worst , for the speech , the one she's heard too many times before . it's not you , it's me . the part where he tells her he needs some time to be the man she so allegedly deserves despite the fact that the only one she's ever wanted was him . spiral itself is enough to make her sick , hadn't even realized she'd moved to take a seat at the end of her bed until fingers find the plush of her comforter and bunches it tight into her grasp .
she doesn't want to talk about it , she never did . whole point of running to london was to avoid these very conversations yet still they seemed to wait for her anyways . " so what's the problem , then ? " words come faster than she can process but god , she'd had enough of this . battered and bruised of being stuck in the same loop they'd found themselves chasing each other in over the course of the past decade ⸺ a broken record she was tired of letting spin . she lets him finish , eyes stung with the tears that threaten to spill from behind them , blinking them away as if that'll stop the heat that burns in the center of her chest . “ i stopped waiting for you a long time ago , ” ever so barely audible under the crack of her voice . it was true , she had stopped waiting , eventually found no point in sitting around wishing for something someone didn't want , and somewhere along the way had tried ( and failed ) to convince herself she didn't want it too .
gaze rises to find his but of course it's nowhere to be found , her own instead dropping to the wood that sat beneath their feet . wonders if he knows his words cut like a knife , best friend , he'd said , the crux their relationship had rested on now cracking under it's own weight . if a best friend was what he wanted , then a best friend was all he was going to get . " i'm tired , brooks , " hand lifts to let fingers pinch the bridge of her nose , " i don't want to do this anymore . . . i don't want to keep having this same conversation with you over and over and over again only for us to just end up exactly where we were before , " a huff , hand raked through the top of her head , " look . . . i know how you feel , i know what you want and i know what you don't but i just . . . " words get stuck in her throat , leaving a silence that hangs in the air for a moment , " i don't understand why you keep doing this to me . . . " head shakes , nail picking at the seams of the stitches on her bedding . " i just feel like you . . . you keep dangling this in front of my face and for what ? just so you can keep reminding me of what it is you don't want ? “ . . . ” i never ask you for anything , i never pressure you to make it official , i keep my distance exactly as far as you want it to be , " or as close as she allows him to get . she can feel it creeping up from the bottom of her throat , the heartbreak , the kind that only gets worse the more you try to swallow it . the kind that feels inevitable .
a sob , quiet , lip twitching underneath the cracks of carefully curated demeanor .
" what do you want from me ? "

jason stayed frozen behind the couch for another dramatic second, peeking over the cushions with only his eyes visible. he narrowed them suspiciously at aria before glancing between her and the abandoned pillow. " ...that's exactly what somebody who's about to hit me again would say , " he muttered. “ i wasn't born yesterday. i've seen enough horror movies to know how this goes. ” after another beat, he cautiously emerged from his hiding spot, pointing a warning finger at her as he rounded the couch. “ and don't try to butter me up with the ' good for character ' crap. i got plenty of character. look at me. i'm practically overflowing with it. ” his grin gave him away before he could keep a straight face. he dropped onto the couch beside her with an exaggerated groan, sinking so deeply into the cushions it looked like he might never get back up again. when she handed him her phone, he immediately began scrolling through the menu with the seriousness of a man studying game tape. " okay... " he murmured. “ sausage, garlic sauce, cheesy bread... ” he nodded approvingly to himself. " oh, hell yeah. cinnamon sticks? now we're talkin'. "
he looked over at aria, one eyebrow raised. “ see? this is why we're friends. you understand the importance of ordering enough food to survive the night. ” the mention of a trampoline park made his face light up almost instantly. " aria... " he turned toward her, genuine excitement replacing the theatrics. “ that's actually the coolest idea i've ever heard. we'd absolutely rent the place out. ” he could already picture it. " me, you, bon, the guy you're always with … inflatable obstacle course. loser buys dinner. " he paused before breaking into a laugh. “ actually, no. bonnie's way too competitive. she'd train for it. she'd show up in, like, compression sleeves and electrolyte packets. ” he snorted to himself. " and don't give me that graceful bullshit. i've got elite edge work. " he gestured proudly toward himself. “ i'm an athlete. ” there was a brief pause before he sighed. “ ...okay, yeah. i'd probably eat shit on the first obstacle. ” he rubbed his chin thoughtfully. " but bon? " he pointed toward the hallway as if she might suddenly appear. " she'd somehow beat both of us without even breakin' a sweat. then she'd stand at the finish line lookin' all smug while tellin' us, ' good effort, guys. ' … i'd never recover. "
“ i’ve hung around enough men to know that your stomach is genuinely never ending and the last thing i want is to be fighting you for the last slice when i’m already hangry , “ huffs , sure jason was no stranger to just how unrelenting she could get after one too many hours with nothing to snack on other than the air between her words . hadn’t expected jason to seem so excited , though should’ve guessed it so considering how much of the foundations of their relationship rested on the freedoms their inner child felt around each other ⸺ case and point , the impromptu pillow fight she’d still been catching her breath from as she sprawled even further out onto the couch .
mention of ‘ that guy ‘ she’s always with brings her head to snap in his direction , pupils dilated , cheeks flushed of all their color despite the fact that jason so quickly breezes right past the subject . “ you can have good edge work and still lack poise , you know “ not that she had it either , but there was a small sliver of hope that perhaps bonnie would go easier on her than she did on him , somehow not even a question of which of the three of them would come out on top . " i don't even think i'd want to go against her in this just for the sake of my own ego . . . maybe i can just fight you and bonnie can referee so i don't kick your ass too bad when we're jousting , " as soon as jason's finish putting in his order her phone has returned back to it's placed in her hands , food paid for and on its' way to be delivered just before she swipes to assess their options . " oooh wait ⸺ look at this one , " screen tilts towards him to show an indoor entertainment zone complete with she'd mentioned prior , “ how do you reckon we'd do in an actual escape room ? i actually don't think i'm allowed to do those anymore because the last time i did i got so fucking pissed off that no one was solving the clues right i walked out and completely fucked the game . . . “ ⸺ ” and for the record , we don't have to invite that guy if you don't want to , you know i don't mind it being the third wheel . ”
"no, like, exactly. that's perfect, let's get two mozzarella stick orders, though. i'm starving," once again, she knows it's against her nutritionist, and she's got a season coming up, but... god, she wants to eat whatever she can, now. before she's back to getting photographed at stuff like this, when the random middle-aged men of the world remembr the girl who reports on football exists, "we're too old for shots. let's do them anyways." she shakes her head dramatically, and waves at the little cocktail waiter that knows they're going to tip like crazy — two extremely drunk girls who love another diva to talk with always do, and she orders messily, getting them another round, shots and the appetizers. it's going to be awesome, "should we do this for my bachelorette? everyone has to sing in my honor and i can be the queen who judges the winner. or is that too bridezilla?"
amara’s face immediately turns sour as soon as shot of vodka is tipped to the back of her throat , it’s been a while since she’s been so . . . unbuttoned . there was no regard paid to who might be watching , no pressure felt to uphold her newly minted langford name . here , they were just two sisters , having fun just as sisters were supposed to do . “ you could never be a bridezilla . . . i feel like between the two of us i’m going to be the fucking bridezilla and i used to do this for a living , “ used to , infliction of past tense still feels foreign on her tongue , but this is not the time nor place to unpack that kind of baggage . “ i think you’re the bride and if you want your bridal party to be your jesters then that’s exactly what you’re gonna get , “ she says , enough conviction in hopes she’ll remember it tomorrow . “ wait , where are we going on your bachelorette again ? did we decide ? “ a pause , sip of her now watered down mojito taken , “ should we do our bachelorettes together ? “
a few men in charro suits filtered into the room alongside dahlia, each carrying a violin, guitarrón, or trumpet beneath one arm. she followed behind them in a traditional traje de charra, embroidered in cream and crimson, a pair of red roses tucked carefully into old hollywood waves. for a moment, she simply listened, lingering in the doorway long enough to catch the last few notes before the sour one rang out. her lips curved into a warm smile. " that was beautiful , " she said gently. " unfortunately... " her gaze flicked toward the musicians gathering behind her. “ there's not much room for a piano in mariachi. ” a quiet laugh escaped her as she stepped closer, shaking her head. " and no. " she lifted both hands in surrender.
“ i promise nobody sent me to throw you out. ” it took another second before recognition settled over her features. she tilted her head ever so slightly , studying the young woman in front of her. “ ... wait a second. ” another smile spread across her face. “ you're ollie, aren't you? ” she searched her memory before snapping her fingers softly. " your dad used to show me pictures of you. " a fond laugh followed. " you couldn't have been much taller than the piano bench, and now..." she looked her over with genuine amazement. “ mírate. all grown up ! ”
she’s not sure what shocks her more , the fact that no one seems to be itching to throw her off of the property or the fact that she seems to have gotten herself recognized because of it . there’s a furrow in her eyebrows , narrowing what features of her face it can reach as fingers hover over the keys ; there’s something about that voice that sounds oddly too familiar , like a song she’s heard on the radio but can’t quite put a name to ⸺ and in a way , it was . realization hits like a ton of bricks at the front of her head , “ oh my god , dolly ? “ said like it’s even a question , hard not to remember her face after a lifetime of seeing it plastered on billboards in every corner of the country she’s visited . “ oh stop , i might’ve gotten taller but my dad would argue i’m still that little girl that used to crawl under the piano so you guys couldn’t hit the pedals , “ she teases , most of her time when she was little spent being too curious for her own good . it feels wrong to be having this conversation sitting down , bench pushed far enough back from the piano for her to stand and greet dahlia with the warmth she so deserved . “ i can’t even believe you remember me ⸺ i was so little and you’re , like . . . i mean , you’re dahlia delgado , “ sure there were an infinite amount of faces and names she had to conjure up at once , felt like an honor to be one she remembered . “ my dad is going to die when i tell him we ran into each other so don’t be surprised if you get a call from him tomorrow ⸺ i knew you were from here but i didn’t know you lived here still , or did you just move back ? “
