what was the dune article?
This one! https://slate.com/culture/2021/10/dune-2021-movie-vs-book-white-savior-islam.html
Specifically this line articulated what I felt watching the movie: "that centering of whiteness reads, in a way, as a type of white savior narrative. Even when the savior fails, destroys everything, and becomes a monster, his agency overrides that of everyone else and reduces them to side stories who are swept away in the terrific power of his myth."
Like, I get that Dune is eventually about paul becoming a space fascist or whatever (I think....based on what i've seen on the internet lol) but like... he is the central figure in this story, you are still placing him over a movie populated by side characters who are not white. It was a very good article! Really delved into the influence of Islam and Middle Eastern cultures on Frank Herbert and then how Villeneuve ultimately flattened it all into a generic "desert culture"
Pairs well with this
