“play that funky music whiite boyy, play thay funky music riightt,”
will paused set his paper about how people in urban areas hate pigeons– what can he say, tj oshie got to him– aside. and rolled his eyes. you changed his ringtone again. he knew it was you because mack would’ve changed it to a clip of himself singing the theme to the fresh prince of bel air.
“mom, hi,” will shifted to sit up on the bean bag. mack got up and mumbled something about getting more strawberry juice.
“everything’s ok, we’re good, how’s everyone at home?”
“joey two families ago in the blue house down the street–”
mack comes busting through the door, slightly out of breath, waved to will, and calledout your name, on a bee-line to the bathroom.
“will, is everything ok?”
“yeah …probably …uh, yeah, what were you saying about joey?” will looked up to see mack walk into the bathroom– thanks for sparing him the invitation–
“my flight was cancelled” mack’s voice echoed from the bathroom over the running water. will’s ears perked.
“is this a good time?” his mum asked through the phone, “whose flight is cancelled?”
“mack’s supposed to fly out at 12,” will checked his watch, 11:00. “he’s just got back from the airport.”
“will he makee it home for easter?”
“i’ll let you know when he reschedules his flight so that you can sleep tonight,” will knew his mum, he knew he’d get a phone call at 7 am sharp the next asking for an update if he left her to worry.
“what’s joey doing in halifax?” will remembered playing hockey with his former neighbor, joey during summer camps for a couple years. joey had a charlie’s angels poster in his room. they used to alternate sleepovers.
“his flight also got cancelled, his mum didn’t tell me why– and guess who else is in halifax–” will’s attention drifted when you walked out of the bathroom in a cloud of steam, with the small you-sized towel all 3 of you shared. it hit to your mid thigh. a droplet dripped down the smooth skin there. “mum, hold on a sec.”
he called out your name, “i heard there are flights from halifax that got cancelled, go check yours.”
“say hi to your mum from us,” you yelled back, walking around, looking for your laptop. mack sat down at the kitchen island on the phone– probably with his mum talking about his flight.
he forwarded the message to his mum, who told him to send her greetings, “she said hi back.”
will picked up your laptop and waved it in the air to spare the 5 minutes you would be running around– not that he wouldn’t appreciate the view though.
you picked it up and sat across the living room, the screen illuminating your face, collarbone, and shoulders. you were beautiful.
you rolled your eyes and slammed your laptop shut. the huff it let out fanned your hair out of your face. will smiled. oh. yeah. flight.
“mum, can you hold on again?”
“not looking good?” he asked you.
“blizzard in halifax, it’ll last 2 more days,” you sank further into your bean bag, pouting.
“mom says there’s no point in getting on the next available flight because the airports will be so backed up we’ll just be waiting in there watching our planes be delayed,” mack called out. he walked over and plopped himself onto your bean bag, wrapping his arm around you. you scooched over, still pouting, but now leaning into his touch.
“there’s no point flying out anyway, they’ll miss half the week,” will’s mum said from the phone.
“sorry for eavesdropping, but i couldn’t help but overhear.”
“it’s okay.” you and mack had started talking about trains.
“they’re welcome to come over with you.”
will short-circuited. “what?”
“i mean, it’s up to the 3 of you, of course, i’m just putting it on the table as an option.”
will internally trouble-shooted possible situations that could come up. his siblings. how to explain the inevitable touchiness between the 3 of you. how much room was available.
“they can just stay in your room.”
will opened his mouth to say something. you leaned back in the bean bag again. so the trains were a bust. mack brushed a strand of hair back behind your ear.
“calm down. the guest rooms are taken. aunt carol and your cousins are staying over.”
will thought about it for a moment. if he could bribe his brother…
“i mean, it’s just a little sad that they were looking forward to seeing their families since christmas and now …they’re deflated. and cold.” will looked up to see you still in the small towel. probably not cold. but yeah.
“all right, i love you.” his mum paused for a moment. “no matter what okay?”
after 4 rounds of ‘no you hang up’ they counted down from 3 and hung up at the same time.
“so y’all wanna watch my sister and cousins embarrass me for a week straight?”
will never imagined he’d wake up in his old race car bed in a you and mack sandwich. he cracked his eyes open to see his brad marchand poster hanging on the wall, it’s corners peeling. will smiled smugly, yeah, they’re both mine. marchy smiled back back at him smugly as well– he gets it.
he crawled out of his bed with minor contact from his foot with the steering wheel and avoided eye contact with marchy before pulling on his boxers. and then he walked to the bathroom. huh, he settled right back into routine.
his cousin, dennis splashed water in his face immediately. yes, he’s definitely settled right back into routine. “your old-ass race car bed was not made for that,” he grumbled with a toothbrush still in his mouth.
“is your old-ass race car bed jealous?”
his mum walked in on a toothbrush sparing match and effectively pushed past it to open the mirror cabinet. “uncle ronnie insists on using the purple mouthwash, aunt carol wants cotton swabs, and your sister lost her hair spray. again,” she gathered the products and rubbed the toothpaste off of dennis’ cheek. she spared will a look. “and sort that out before you give grandma a heart attack and mack a panic attack.” she walked back out through the guest room door before he could ask what she meant.
when he looked to dennis, he just nudged his head towards the mirror. will looked into it and immediately wanted the ground to open up and swallow him whole. welcome home. you’d have to help him put on your concealer again.
“morning, dennis,” you yawned as you walked into the bathroom wearing a bathrobe with little candy canes on it from christmas 2016. you must have found it in his closet. he’d tell you to take it home.
will snuck in one last toothbrush swat at dennis’ face when he caught him checking you out.
“where’s john?” will’s uncle ronnie brought up in the middle of a conversation about mitch marner and the maple leafs. they both looked outside the window to see… jesus. oh wait. sorry. goodness gracious?
you were hanging upside down from the swingset. will saw you tacking your slip to your thighs with his hair wax that morning. holding his little cousin, john– wearing a superhero cape– by the stomach, swinging him with his hands and feet extended. he was ‘flying’. will could hear john’s giggles from inside the house.
“i lost the cape battle 3 weeks ago,” uncle ronnie sighed, nursing his beer in a coffee mug. well, it’s 5 o’clock somewhre. “has she been out there for 2 hours?”
“it doesn’t seem like she’s gonna come back in any time soon,” somehow, will isn’t surprised.
“they’re fitting in great,” ronnie nodded over his shoulder.
will turned to see mack with his aunt carol and cousin laura laughing together. he must have brought up the shampoo story because both carol and laura had their hands in his hair. he’ll make sure to ask mack later.
a loud squeal turned will and ronnie back towards the window to see you helping 2 toddlers ‘fly’. “now john’s going to ask me to do that every time we go to the playground,” ronnie sighed.
“come on,” will’s dad groaned from the couch. ah, easter. a day to watch the celtics-bulls game with all your closest and furthest family. not that he was complaining.
his dad was in a deep conversation with mack and you– both somehow sitting on either side of him about basketball– will barely got half the conversation, basketball was more of a holiday thing for him, but you and mack had insisted for him to watch more at home.
will looked over his dad to you, on the other side of the couch. “can i braid your hair?” his cousin, 2– actually, she must be 4 now, josie, asked you from where she sat in your lap.
without hesitation, you said, “sure!”, smiled, and poked her cheek. “ill sit on the floor and you’ll sit on the couch, ok?”
mack had will’s other cousin, john, about 6..? in his lap, asking questions about the game that will couldn’t answer himself. mack chattered on and pointed out things on the tv, still holding the conversation with will’s dad.
“you’re really pretty,” josie said, in what he though was the most adorable high voice. and then he realized that he had the same capacity for compliments as a child in pre-k. okay.
“thank you,” will could hear your smile.
“do you work?” josie began running her hands through your hair… like will does when he’s bored. he also had the same hobbies as a child in pre-k.
“no, i’m still in school.”
will’s dad, mack, you, and john groaned at the same time at the tv. the spurs got another basket, having stolen the ball from the celtics and passing it up the court. in a small voice, mack told john, “that’s called a fumble.”
“do you like school?” you focused back on josie.
“um…. i like playing with my friends at school.”
“yeah, that’s just about how i feel every day,” you laughed, “what do you do with your friends?”
“we like to color. and play tag. and house.” and josie continued to list playground activities.
“you want to swap with me?” his dad asked, snapping will’s attention back to him and the game. how did the celtics fall behind so fast?
“son, there’s this thing that almost a right of passage for any man,” his dad said, in a teasing tone, momentarily turning away from the tv towards him, leaning back on the couch to look at will over mack’s shoulders.
“getting made fun of for being whipped,” will rolled his eyes, and his dad reached over to clap his shoulder, smiling. “you just have to take it,” he gave the shoulder a squeeze.
john turned to mack and asked, “what does ‘whipped’ mean?"
“you’re blush is gorgeous, where is it from?” will’s cousin, laura asked you. you and mack sat on an ottoman, backs pressed up against each other. he was talking to will’s cousin, dennis. you could feel his spine go rigid. a smile spread across your face.
“i think it’s nars,” you silently prayed– it was easter, of course. that neither she nor will’s sister, jamie, would ask you which shade it was.
“the iridescence gives you a healthy glow, what shade is it?” jamie asked.
“yeah, i justified buying it by saying it was a bronzer-blush-highlighter all in one,” you smiled, lying through your teeth. it was mostly not why you bought the shade, “orgasm rush, in their powder formula.”
you could feel every muscle in mack’s back– a lot of them– tense up. his ears were probably pink.
“their formula is soo good, i have this pinkish shade, dominant,” laura pulled her hair out of her face so that you and jamie could get a better look at her makeup.
“it’s so your shade, not too pink and not too red, great with your green eyes,” you smiled.
“we should totally trade our blushes and like other makeup tomorrow morning,” grace suggested, and she was met with enthusiastic agreements.
will smiled when he looked up from a conversation with his grandma about the farmer’s market that’s on his morning jogging route to see you getting along with his cousin and his sister so well. not that he was paranoid about jamie saying anything embarrassing about him. she probably wouldn’t. they had negotiated a deal. behind you, mack had turned pink in a conversation with dennis. ugh, dennis.
