Truth time... I have always been a big fan of Ernest Hemingway‘s short stories but until this past year I had never actually read one of his novels. I know, I know. That is basically blasphemy to say as both an avid reader and wannabe author. I do own several of his novels I’ve just never gotten around to reading them. I decided to start with The Sun Also Rises. In true Hemingway style, this book is written with concise, short sentences and very direct storytelling. The characters are more relatable then likable which is kind of refreshing compared to many books. There really isn’t all that much in terms of a major climax but that’s kind of what makes this book great. As a reader, you feel like a fly on the wall of the characters’ every day lives and the deep flaws that surround them. 📚What’s your favourite Hemingway novel or short story?📚

So I’m going to break a rule here and post this book under the #booksnotbullies tag, even though it’s not blue. 💙💙💙 I started this book on Monday and had it finished by Tuesday night. I couldn’t put it down, it was that incredibly moving. Speak is about 13 year old Melinda, who spends her first year of high school as a selective mute, speaking as little as possible, following a horrific incident at an end of the summer party. The people in Melinda’s world may not hear her say much, but as the reader, we have the opportunity to hear everything going on in her mind. She is often unsure of herself, especially when facing an overwhelming number of bullies around her, yet she holds onto a sarcastic wit and a dry sense of humor. Her character was so easy to relate to and the story unfolded in a terrifyingly realistic way. I truly feel this is an important book for anyone to read, but especially young adults. I highly recommend it.

Everyone on IG has been loving it and I have a feeling my former teen self is going to really relate to the main character. 📚😍 This journal… totally bought it because I loved the colour and the saying, but alas it remains one of my many empty journals. Some women have a problem with shoes. Mine is with notebooks.
