July 16th: TFN Farm Update
The pigs have now been on the TFN site for close 1 month. It is one complete litter of 7 pigs and they are currently 3 months old.
1 tonne of organic pig feed costs $800; contains vegetable oils and molasses in addition to organic grains and legumes such as wheat, barley, and soy. This is expensive, but the nutrients will be returned to the soil.
It is estimated that each pig needs about 500 lbs of feed each until they are slaughtered in November.
Pigs are fed directly on the ground to encourage rooting.
In addition to this high quality feed, the pigs are fed with supplementary table scraps, field scraps, spent grains from breweries, potato culls from neighbouring farmers, and produce donated from local grocery stores and restaurants. Currently, they have loads of garlic scapes in their pen.
Despite the draught, the drainage ditch has remained high and of quality water; this is pumped using a generator and used to provide water for pigs and to water crops.
Build a permanent trellising system on the west side of the market garden. This will run the length of the market garden at a 90 degree angle/ perpendicular to the market garden field rows, and will be trellised across 4 rows. This structure is being built with drift logs that are being secured deep into the soil after creating solid holes using an 8 inch auger and then densely packing the soil around the logs, which protrude from the holes to heights of about 10 ft. Each end is secured by logs drilled into the soil at 45 degree angles (see below photos). Wire will then be stretched along each supporting log to form a permanent trelling system that can be rotated each season across the four rows and will also function as a living wind break for this very windy site.
