oh my god, oh jesus, oh boy. this probably definitely LXC’s influence, NMJ and him first meet when NMJ is attending some seminar or other about natural horsemanship and they hit it off immediately, LXC stops by all the time and helps him with his horses, and they know both styles of riding offer good things, and could stand to improve on others, so they just compare notes and train together a lot.

meng yao comes into the picture and they both influence him this way, he learns from the best so to speak, but of course he spends the most time with NMJ in his beginnings, NMJ who teaches him to never find fault with the horse, always with himself, who teaches him natural horsemanship techniques, NMJ who is heartbroken when he sees meng yao going down that mainstream path later of caring more about results than the animals themselves...

“So…” Wei Wuxian says, when it becomes apparent that Lan Wangji is not going to initiate any conversation. “Hanguang Jun? Lan Zhan? Can I call you Lan Zhan?”

“Mn,” Lan Wangji says, and sips at his tea. 

Wei Wuxian almost grimaces. This is going to be a long dinner. “Thank you for your very generous donation!” he says cheerily, instead. “The orphanage will be very pleased to hear that we raised so much money.”

“Mn,” Lan Wangji says again.

“You know your bid alone exceeded our target?” Wei Wuxian asks, just to test the waters. 

He’s done this before, and knows that some people enjoy hearing about how rich and how generous they are. Lan Wangji does not look like one of those sorts of people, but you never really know. 

The tips of Lan Wangji’s ears redden. Huh. Interesting. So he hadn’t meant to show his wealth off when he’d made that bid…

“You know the previous bid for me was only six hundred dollars, right?” Wei Wuxian presses, and watches in absolute glee as the flush on the tip of Lan Wangji’s ear travels down. “To raise the bid to ten thousand dollars so suddenly seems a bit…extravagant?” 

Lan Wangji looks away. “I was feeling charitable,” he says, unruffled in every sense except for how red his ears are. 

“Were you?” Wei Wuxian challenges. “Or did Lan er-gege really want to win a date with me?”

Lan Wangji looks up at that, eyes narrowed. “Nonsense,” he scolds. 

Wei Wuxian’s lips curl up. He sets his teacup down. “Whatever your motives are,” Wei Wuxian tells him, “thank you for your donation. And thank you for saving me from the possibility of having to go out with Jin Zixun.” 

Lan Wangji is silent for a moment. And then he says, “That’s why.”

Wei Wuxian blinks at him. “Hmm?” 

“Jin Zixun,” Lan Wangji says, serious. “You seemed displeased that he was trying to win. That’s why I bid.”

Oh.

“You spent ten thousand dollars to make sure I didn’t have to go out with someone who made me uncomfortable,” Wei Wuxian says. 

Lan Wangji nods. “More, if necessary.”

If Wen Qing were around, she would probably say something about how creepy Lan Wangji sounds, about how Wei Wuxian should be wary that Lan Wangji might be an overzealous admirer (stalker, she would use the word stalker), but Wei Wuxian is…more intrigued and touched than anything else. 

If Lan Wangji means to seduce him, and then murder him in a secondary location, Wei Wuxian is down for it. On the condition that they get through the whole seduction thing first. 

What can he say? He has a thing for danger. 

“Lan er-gege,” he says sweetly, “for that, I think you deserve a kiss.” 

Lan Wangji doesn’t have to be prompted twice.

(Wei Wuxian doesn’t end up being murdered in a secondary location, but he does walk with a limp for the next two days. 

Worth it, though. So worth it.)

And it just. . . was not anywhere near as easy as North made it look. "Jack slumped back from his angular and awkward creation to watch North in his element. North hummed along happily, big hands making small deft adjustments that shaved just a curl of ice off here, planed an edge smooth, nicked out the slightest details there. What had been unrecognizable before was now clearly the model of a knight in armor, with delicate filigree work decorating the plates. "He abandoned any pretense of working and perched on the end of the table, wrapping his arms around his knees. The knight was cool- hell, everything North made was perfect. He'd have been thrilled to get even the simplest thing from Santoff Claussen as a kid. Except, hah, the little detail of his always being on the naughty list.
