Shine a light – town hosts first Window Wanderland

Nailsworth’s inaugural Window Wanderland begins this evening, 5-9pm, and runs until Sunday. Around 50 shops, homes and businesses are taking part, and refreshments are available at St George’s Church on Saturday evening. You may have noticed on assorted Porty pages online a proposal to bring some light and colour into this rather dark and dismal time of year. That’s especially true when so many of the events which would have taken place in December have all had to be cancelled. The idea is to turn night-time Portobello into one, large art gallery with people filling their windows with all kinds of art works illuminated simply by leaving the room lights on. “I thought it was great that the event was open to all and it made it clear that everyone’s contribution was valid - from children’s paintings to full on installations. This avoided comparisons or fears on my part of not being good enough. I love how amazing people’s creativity is at all levels when it is not judged. So, you could knock up a quick window within the day or plan well ahead and all was acceptable. I would have been intimidated to make a window if it had been billed as an art event as I am not super creative so I was able to enjoy doing my window and I loved it.”

“It was the most special balloon sculpture I ever made, it took me 15 hours and I made it for my partner, Vid Warren who has just passed away from brain cancer. So much blood, sweat and tears went into the sculpture. Not many people will know what was behind it but I hope they got to enjoy some of the love and energy that fuelled it.”

Last year my aunt and some of her friends helped start a community project called Window Wanderland and they desperately need votes to win a community award. Window Wanderland is a brilliant community event where people’s windows and gardens become colourful displays. This transforms any neighbourhood into an outdoor gallery to be enjoyed by everyone, as they walk around seeing their streets in a new light. It’s fun, unique and brings people together. Pictured above you can see my aunt's window from last year. They have been nominated for a community award which comes with £25k worth of funding for their project which they need to keep it going.
