windowsill garden update, i ended up trashing everything but the spider plants and my second lot of spring onions because it either didn't come to anything or just died randomly? i also repotted the baby spider today because i swear my mother's soil was contaminated with these stupid flies. the surfaces of the inner and outer pots were both absolutely teeming with larvae. i felt a bit yucky even just putting the pot in the bin

there is a moment when all the seasons

exist at once

this bush is drooping

with blossoms that are browning

already at the edges, a ruddy stain

among their white roundness

like snow, like the bite that remains

in the air, pollen is sifting

onto slowly awakening

bees alighting on every bleeding surface

the afternoon burns

and shakes

crisp husky leaves up from underfoot

dead remnants still kicking

dust in the face of a fragile new greenness

moss winning the battle for the lawn

is creeping closer to the end

the walk and the shade

whispers over itself

about sleeping

I walk outside

without shoes

to feel the ground for the first time

It is apparently solar punk action week?

Back in the spring I planted the stumps from some store bought lettuce, which later went to seed. I have harvested the seed and tomorrow I’m going to plant some of that seed in the plastic take-out containers that six months of COVID lockdown brought into my life. Lettuce is shallow rooted so the containers don’t have to be very deep, and these have clear plastic lids that will let in light and keep the soil from drying out. Also, the city pretends to collect recycling but I’m 99% sure that the recycling truck just dumps it into the same landfill the regular garbage goes to, so I’m trying to divert my plastic by reusing whatever I can.

I still have some carrots and potatoes out in the planter box in the garden, and I have to harvest seeds from the radishes I let go off out there. Thinking about trying to grow a few radishes on the windowsill this winter, if I can find a deep enough container. Wife loves a radish and she’d be thrilled to have one randomly in December. Maybe it will be a solstice gift for her. Just a dirt covered root vegetable all done up in a pretty box. Who wouldn’t love that?

I also have a few scallions still outside that can get cut down and the root end repotted inside for the winter.

And then we’re going to start knitting hats and mitts for the inner city camp.

All of this over the course of one year...phew...

Might have to get a window box in my uni room so I can grow lettuce and radishes in the windowsill.
