2015 Escalada do Sil, Valdeorras (Spain) Found at Barcelona Wine Bar (Cathedral Heights, Washington, D.C.) Bright Ruby red in color, with a quick splash decanting and just a short wait, the bright aromas of sour cherry liqueur with savory, spicy, and mineral elements jumped out of the glass on the first nose. A touch of floral and smoky aromas of violet and incense emerged as the wine adapted to the glass. This 2015 Escalada do Sil certainly drank beautifully! The flavors mirroring the aromas; Tannic and bright textured elements dancing on the palate, taking turns in the forefront without completely settling in any specific direction, adding an element of subtle discovery to every sip. From the “Valley of Gold”, possibly the oldest wine region in the area as ancient Romans planted vines after mining the land for gold. The grapes: Merenzao (Bastardo or Trousseau), Mencia (Jaen), and Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouchet). The vineyards for this wine are located on terraced sloped hills by the sinuous river Sil, approximately 90 miles inland in the Southeastern region of Galicia, Spain. Produced by Compañia de Vinos del Atlantico (Alberto Orte & Patrick Mata) imported to the US by the wonderful people at Olé & Obrigado. Definitely recommend.
