#inktober day 18: a Polish Winged Hussar. This one was requested, bit in all honesty they were on my list already because they are so damn cool looking. Like a cross between Jason Vorhees, Shredder from TMNT and something from Warhammer Fantasy Battle. But they were real, and between the late 16th-18th centuries formed the shock elite cavalry of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Their wooden wings, decorated with eagle, ostrich, swan or goose feathers clattered noisily as they charged into the massed ranks of the enemy. Time and again during this period they proved the decisive factor in countless battles, often against overwhelming odds. Ballpoint and brushpen on A5 watercolour paper.
