Let's pause and talk about Rose Lalonde for a second, shall we?
From the very beginning, this girl has been widely acknowledged for her sarcasm, snark, and quick wit. She's incredibly intelligent, and, if we're being honest, often gives the impression of being a cold-hearted bitch.
Except to remind everyone how much she cared about her mother, we won't even get into all the shit she went through Pre-Scratch, since all the kids had it pretty rough. No, let's start with right after the Scratch, when she discovers she is meant to lead everyone else to safety.
Think about that. She's thirteen years old, and though she's far from a normal thirteen-year-old, she is suddenly responsible for the lives of a dozen individuals, plus or minus the entire population of all universes everywhere. Stressful? Maybe a little.
Which helps explain her "sudden" interest in alcohol. Rose knows from watching her mother how numbing drinking can make a person. She needs something to take the edge off.
The results of her alcoholism have an intensely negative effect on her relationship with Kanaya, though Kanaya continues to try her best. Once Rose is sober, she fully realizes what she has (not) done. She is finally able to See clearly.
The Seer understands how badly she has messed up. She has neglected the duties she once took very seriously, she has hurt her girlfriend, and she feels she has disappointed her mother.
Rose Lalonde is in pain. She will refuse to forgive herself until she has made things right.
