Stealably small 11 yr old Jacky.

She spent a lot of time in the woods learning from faeries, and added following weird cats to her itinerary after she found Peter's eye. It probably gave Claudia gray hairs, but Claudia knew which mushroom to eat to get pregnant. She must have been expecting it. I don't think she saw what took place in the woods but she was aware that there were chaperones out there. Keeping Jacky out of them was a losing fight. It would be like trying to keep a ferret out of a paper basket, or grow a plant with no water. I try to keep up with alt text on bluesky and usually focus on capturing what I was trying to convey than a dry description of the image. Will just copy paste that since it has nuggets in it.

'Eleven year old Jacky holds a lanky orange cat that completely fills her arms and thensome. She has longer hair that is tied back. Jacky experienced a kind of village raising as a kid. It was only her and her mom, but when she went into the woods she met faeries. It was a dice roll if they were going to mean her harm or not, but she got pretty good at telling the difference. The good ones taught her things that would help her survive on her own. They probably also taught her to fuck with people, but what power does an eleven year old have. When she was seven years old she found Peter's eye in a drawer in Gale's house. I haven't settled on why she and Claudia were there. I don't think Gale and Jacky knew each other in this iteration of the story. The eye rattled for her from a wooden box upstairs. She took it home and Gale was never any the wiser- he'd never known it was there to begin with. After finding the eye, Peter started to appear to her. He talked a little. She followed him and other cats that began to appear to secret places, although she couldn't trust the cats all the way either. Occasionally one would try to lead her somewhere bad. Jacky had to get real good at running and real good at detecting bullshit at a young age.'

I don't know how many unanswered asks I have about Cat's Eyes, but I know it's been ten years since I updated the lore, or at least since the last time I drew it. Hopefully this covers some of them!

Cat's Eyes are baubles that are used in my story to get to and from the Way. They're something that traditionally only humans have. They're made from a cat's eye (post-mortem) and some other ingredients, including a seed from that cat's crop. The cat must also die a good death (death can't be willed on it). The 'stuff' is wrapped in a flax cloth with the eye and sealed away in a wooden box for 81 years, during which time the cat's spirit will have to serve Su. It will spend the majority of that time tending Su's crops and earning back the rest of its body. If the box is opened before then, the cat will be fine but the eye will shatter.

The spirit has the option to come back to the waking world and haunt its eye's maker if it's unhappy (or an asshole)- so that's something to consider.

If left undisturbed for the full 81 years the spirit will become a Wink and leave Su's field to join everyone else in the afterlife. The eye will wait until a person of its choosing comes along and rattle in place until it's found. The spirit the eye belonged to stays tethered to it and may lead its human of choice to all manner of hidden places.

From this old post. A lot of cats who have had their eye charmed were Familiars and their person (their friend) would have found out just through having a relationship with them. There have to be other ways because the story is more fun if a cat can be tricked into becoming a Wink, or if a person has to be wily to get it, but I haaaven't quite settled yet.

Sparks are rare magic that comes from Winks. They shed them from their missing eye. Sparks can last for a very long time, so there's ways to get them. They can also be found. If you're a hopeful stray, a lonely statue or mural is a good place to look.

First Light keeps a form of the sun for Su, but his other job is to keep Sha from catching her body. So she's often seen chasing him. It can be a good omen to see First Light, but with the caveat that things will be much harder before they get better.
