how to stay warm
so here’s one of the most useful hacks I have found for staying warm during the winter!
hand sanitizer when lit on fire will burn only where there is actual sanitizer; that and it can burn on pretty much any surface!
so you just need a fire-proof tray or bowl of some sort; a bunch of hand sanitizer; and a lighter and you’ve got a wicked warm and self-contained fire to last you thru the whole night!
if you add rubbing alcohol (like 1pt ipa to 5pts sanitizer) it will stretch your supply even further!

I just learned this today...if your heater isn’t working (since it’s starting to get really cold where I live so I noticed lol) check your coolant levels. I was turning the heat all the way up and getting nothing but cold air from the vents. It took half a jug of antifreeze coolant and half a jug of water to get my system back up to levels, and when it was the heater worked fine! Just wanted to share in case anyone else runs into this problem...plus I learned it’s a good idea to check your coolant more than once a year :P
Winter Van Life Tips:
Here are some winter van tips and hacks for all those who are in colder climates!
1. Cover Your windows and insulate well. Use all the space you have for insulation and choose an insulation that fits the needs of your van. You can also add removable or permanent covers for your windows made from insulation to help keep the cold out and the warmth in.
2. Wear warm layers to stay warm, and a hat and gloves if it is very cold inside. Thick wool and down blankets are good for this.
3. Cover your windshield wipers with old socks to stop snow from sticking to them. you can also get special windshield covers to put on the outside of the windshield so you can just pull the snow and ice off in the morning!
4. If you get stuck and have no traction, use your car mats to try to help you get unstuck.
5. Use a heat rub that you would use for your muscles to help loosen a frozen lock.
6. Electric blankets take up very little energy and can be a lifesaver in cold weather in your van.
7. Use a hot water bottle to keep you warm and keep your blankets warm all night.
8. Find somewhere warm to stay for a few nights if it’s really cold. you can stay at hotels, hostels, air bnb’s, or even cabins at year-round campgrounds.

The immersion heater
What harm could it do, To insert it so deeply? All he needed, Was to warm up. With a thrust and a yelp, Followed by a flick of the switch, He was soon glowing, Like fireflies in the snow.
Keep this trick in your back pocket.
