Winter Harbor Light, Mark Island, Mount Desert Narrows, Winter Harbor, Maine. Winter Harbor Light and Mark Island have changes hands a number of times. In 1934 it was auctioned off along with a number of other lighthouse by U.S. Lighthouse Service. George Harmon of Bar Harbor purchased it for $552, then in 1939 sold it for $2000 to writer and musician Bernice “Bunny” Richmond and her husband. Bunny lived there for many years and wrote two books about the experience. After reading the books, children’s book authors Pat and René Prud’hommeaux rented then bought the island. They lived there for 18 years, and would light a Christmas tree in the tower annually around the holidays. They even wrote a kids book called, The Light in the Tower about it.
