About the Mother of Nights and Yule and everything
I am writing a Norwegian fic where Even is Frey (Frøy). And yeah, I know it’s a pretty silly project but I’m having so much fun with it. I started on it ages ago, but I think I’m finally starting to get somewhere. The fic is set on December 21st, on Winter Solace, and of course the story is filled with Norse traditions and weirdness. Because, of course a lot of our Christmas traditions evolved from old heathen customs and from a time where Yule was about celebrating the sun and life and about animal sacrifices, drinking alcohol, about goblins and porridge and Frigg’s misteltoe and Thor’s goats and Frey’s pig and only the gods knows what not. To be honest, not much has changed, hah.
Yule started on December 21st, the longest night and the mother of all nights. The celebration lasted for three days, but Yule lasted even longer, until the Midwinter blot on January 12th. This makes it very interesting to set my story on December 21st.
Anyway. I kinda love that this holiday has become this lovely melting pot of traditions. In addition to Norse traditions and Christian ones there are influences from all over the world. To me that means that we can all find meaning in this holiday, if we are religious or not. No matter what we believe it’s a celebration of the sun and the light and of life, family and giving.
Now, about that fic. I’ve decided to have a chill December but I still hope that I’ll manage to post at least a first chapter of my Frøy fic by Friday the 21st. - As long as I don’t get lost in all our strange holiday traditions it might happen. We’ll see.
Until then - happy holidays! <3
If you liked my recent comic, then you’ll love these layouts drafted up by my art-savior @galoogamelady Hauser is drawn so effectively as a turtle. I can only aspire to capture that look.
This was a birthday gift for a friend, actually. Took ages to do, since it’s not my normal style.
The thing I’ve always wanted to do, more than anything, is to create an experience where people can become truly emotionally invested and rewarded. Like how most people feel about at least one movie or TV series or game. Growing up watching cartoons, I knew that’s how i’d like to make this experience, but upon realizing that tackling something of that size would be near impossible for one person, I turned to my next passion, comics.
Winter Solace is a comic series I’ve been writing since I can remember. It’s changed and evolved over the years and despite drawing a full books worth, it’s never seen the light of day. It’s a story about a young vampire who enters a world of turmoil, attempting to discover their identity while being pushed and pulled by multiple hostile factions, like a supernatural diplomat.
I’ve been really inspired by undertale, and recently I’ve learnt how to use Unity and been able to learn some coding. This year, I’m going to make Winter Solace a game.
It’s super exciting to start thinking about this project again, but now with everything I know now about game design. I’m going to start by making a prototype and blog all the progress, then we’ll see, maybe kickstart the rest?
a gentle Christmas wish for you today: may you find moments of peace and let the light in, exactly as you are. 🕯️❄️
