Tony has to go undercover for somethin' & needs to bring a pretend date, Bucky & Matt both offer, so he chooses both because why not. So Bucky & Matt both get into a competition over who can be the better fake boyfriend. After the mission was a success, they never stopped. Quite awhile later, Tony needs to go "undercover" again, but he needs to get into a place that's for "Married couples only."
But everyone knows who Tony Stark is. There's no way he could easily fake a marriage.
Matt says he can do it easily, he's a lawyer. Fakin' a document would be easy. But no, it'll hafta be televised, or at least have some sort of media coverage; or no one would buy it.
"Divorce wouldn't be too hard to deal with, either. You'd be married to a lawyer."
Once again, he's supposed to choose between both Matt & Bucky, but decides again to marry them both. He realized long ago that he doesn't ever want to choose between the two of them. They're both his friends.
The mission was a success, because of course it was.
However, when it came time for the divorce, each of them realized just how sad the thought of that made them. That even though, legally they were married, it was still fake. But they wanted it to be real.
Tony confesses that he loves them both, and that it was great, albeit a little awkward to be married to them. Considering. They confess as well, not only to Tony, but to each other; which tbh, came as a shock to them. Since they didn't expect to grow to love each other in their friendly competition/persuit of Tony.
But they did.
And they stay together, and it's all happy & warm because I'm a sad sack of shit and I said so.
