The 3 "S" of Winter
Rockingham County Today, Mike Moore 02.17.21
We have been placed under a #WindChillAdvisory, which will begin at midnight tonight and continue to noon on Saturday; dangerous sustained #WindChills of at least -15 are possible during this time. We have also been placed under a #WINTERSTORMWATCH (pictured), which will begin at midnight tomorrow, with #snowfall accumulations of 5 to 10 inches being predicted during this time (though it is starting to look like higher accumulations of #snow could be just to our south and southwest). Be safe! (at Wichita, Kansas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLMg3tmrKPi/?igshid=n7i7pxpsd0ej
The #precipitation we have been receiving today will continue intermittently through the evening. Because the temperature is going up steadily, what we are currently getting will be more nuisance than dangerous (though don't be surprised if you hear a few rumbles of thunder before it's all over). However, we have just been placed under a #WINTERSTORMWATCH from 9:00 PM om Thursday (December 31st) through 3:00 PM on Friday (January 1st). A rather vigorous #storm system will move north out of Mexico on New Years Eve and will reach our vicinity late Thursday afternoon, where the ample moisture it brings will interact with the #cold air that will still be in the area. This combination will cause #freezingrain and #sleet to begin falling, with between one tenth to one quarter of an inch of #ice accumulation is currently expected. In addition, as the temperature continues to drop the moisture is expected to change over to all #snow later in the evening, with several inches of #snowfall accumulation also possible. This should all come to an end by early Friday afternoon. Though winds aren't expected to be unusually strong with this particular event, travel of any kind will likely be quite hazardous during and immediately following this storm. We have just been placed under a #WINTERSTORMWATCH, which will be in effect from noon on Wednesday December 2nd though 6:00 AM on Thursday December 3rd. Heavy #snow will be possible Wednesday afternoon and evening, possibly lasting through the overnight hours. Three to six inches of #snowfall is projected, along with the potential for #winds up to 25 miles per hour; slick road conditions and poor visibility will also be notable hazards. Locally heavy snowfall amounts with some areas getting more than predicted is also possible.
