Hey, for all you long-time tronblr peeps out there, does anyone know whatever happened to the tumblr user “winzler”? I had randomly come across some of their art which was really nice, but looks like their tumblr has either name-changed or disappeared...
The air in the club buzzed with reprocessed energy and the music diffusing from the MP4s in the corner. Programs shuffled around, solitary or in small groups. There were mostly Basics tonight, but the program at the bar was pretty sure the two in the middle booth were ISOs.
The bartender collected the bits he'd laid down and replaced them with his second energy of the night. He was working on a slow night, not looking to get overcharged when he had an early shift next cycle. He just wanted to nurse this last drink and then head back to his circuit to process it before work.
The bartender had tapped a new shipment, from the taste. Pulled from the Eastern Outlands, if the program had his guess. He'd been found there during the Purge and he'd survived the Restoration following the return of the Users long enough to recognize the taste.
He took another pull from the long glass and caught a look off of an admin program coming in from the door. Her brown skin was flushed from the high wind outside and some of her hair had escaped the bun she'd pulled it into. Her eyes had an odd cosmetic patch - fully white, which no break that he could see. He'd never seen anything like it before, and held the look until a word processor stumbled between them on his way to discharge.
He sometimes wished he remembered life before he'd been found by the neutrals in the Outlands. It would be nice to know why he was so uncomfortable without a backup...unfortunately, his memory of any time before his recovery was completely corrupt. He left his hand fall with a sigh and followed the approach of the admin program in the mirror.
She took a deep breath a few steps away, then leaned her side into the bar, facing him. "I'll have an...hm. Argon Green. Buy your drink?"
"Already paid," he said, looking her over. Her suit was corporate class, unwrinkled, and this close, he could tell from the brightness of her circuitry that she was topped off. Just starting her day then. Why was she in this hole in the wall? Looking for him, apparently. But why?
"Ah. Maybe the next?" She tried, taking the bubbling green drink the bartender set down to her side.
"Why don't you just tell me what you want? I'm on next cycle and I'm not looking forward to chasing ghosts poorly processed." he asked, eyes not moving from the mirror behind the bar.
"Straight to business, then. I like that." She took a breath and then let it out. "Fine. I represent a third party who'd like to remain a...well, discreet. He's aware of your reputation and would like to hire you."
"I already have a job," he murmured, swirling his energy and watching it splash up the side of the glass. The program at the far end of the bar was getting rowdy, but the bartender had it in hand from the sounds.
"That can hardly be called a job for a program with your skills"
He smiled. He wasn't watching, but he could hear the displeasure in her tone and wondered how often someone said no to her. She was attractive and from the look of her, she or her backer had serious credit to throw around. "It's good work."
"It's only one step up from being a trash collector."
He found that less to his liking and drained his entire glass in two long swallows. "It keeps him inside and with energy to burn, and I can look myself in the mirror. Have a good cycle, miss."
He pushed off of the bar before she could protest and stepped out, betting she wouldn't leave before settling up.
He cleared the bar and moved into the crisp and static charged air of Tron City, pausing briefly to look around before he pulled out his primary bike to rez.
"Wait!" A hand grabbed at his arm with a grip firmer than he would've expected for an admin program. "We never discussed payment!"
"I already told you, I have a job. It pays my way. I don't want yours!"
"My employer, he can help you! He knows about your past."
That stopped his hands dead calling up the activation sequence on his lightcycle and called his attention sharply back to the other Basic. "What?"
The white-eyed admin looked at him, and he realized for the first time how odd it was not to know exactly where she was looking. "He knows you've been looking for your past. He can help with your memory. He will help, if you take the job."
"My memory is corrupt," he said hoarsely. "There's no help there."
Her grip tightened, then fell away. "You don't know what he's capable of. If he says he can do it, he can do it."
The program calculated the odds and came out with a minuscule percentage. Even so, he found himself turning to her. "What's the job? No - " he interrupted before she could answer. "First. Who's the employer?"
"He wishes - "
"To remain anonymous, yeah. Oh, I'm sorry, discreet. I get it. I still need to know before I take the job."
The admin program took a breath and then let it out. "You won't believe me. I'd intended to take you to him so that wouldn't be a problem."
The program arched an eyebrow and she nodded, jaw clenching briefly. "Fine, fine, just...oh, never mind. I'm Meg."
The other eyebrow joined the first and the admin program hurried on. "He has reason to believe that someone is attempting to pick up Clu's work. Or reboot it, actually. He wants your help to find out the truth of it, and to put it down if it is true."
The program sighed. "That's great. And this mysterious employer would be...?"
She looked uncomfortable for a long moment before steeling herself. Then she took a step closer, and another, until she could lean up to press her mouth right to his ear. "I work for Tron."
Anyone who has mentioned an interest in participating on my or Hannah's GISHWHES team should participate in our group Skype tonight. My Skype email is [email protected], look me up so I can add you.
Things I think we need to look at to start with:
Registration confirmation as a group
What we'll need to do
Lines of communication
SHENANIGANS
How to keep track of our pictures/video, etc
How to keep track of completed items on the list
??? Whatever we need I guess, I'm sure I've missed lots
If you can't participate for scheduling, that's fine! I will be happy to send you a copy of the chat, just let me know! Email is best because asks get eaten sometimes. If I forgot anything, feel free to add in a reblog or let me know to edit it.
For people who are already tired of GISHWHES or just don't want to see the posts about our team, I will be tagging my posts with 'gishwhes 2012.'
