WIP Wednesday but time is fake
I was tagged by @redheadrae & I also refuse to acknowledge time so here we go. This is from (ideally) the next chapter of through woods half dreamt (here) but ultimately what my fic does and what order it is in is none of my business. V’s POV does take priority but it’s multi POV and this will be Judy’s first.
I am tagging anyone whose lil heart will be happier for sharing their work.
Judy was seated on the floor of the small living space off of Misty’s Esoterica. Rogue and Misty sat on opposite ends of the couch, Vik on a soft round ottoman. There was plenty of room on the couch and two chairs if Judy wanted to make the transition but sometimes she just needed the floor.
Misty had convinced her to take an angry nap, parking her in Misty’s own bed and sitting a warm cup of some sort of purple tea next to her. The tea was soothing and Judy found herself drifting away as soon as she closed her eyes, even with the harsh sunlight spilling into the window over the bed. It didn’t last long though, a recurring nightmare roughing her up. Well not so much a nightmare but a memory.
V and Judy had been living together in the over-swagged corpo cottage- a far cry from either of their tastes- for a little over a week when she started disappearing for hours at a time. Judy would roll over to find the bed empty. So one night she had gone out looking for her, a gut feeling telling her where she’d be.
And she had found V, standing in the pouring rain, dark of night, in front of the long abandoned Mega Ride at Pacifica. Judy had been worried, pissed. She didn’t dare park her van anywhere remotely near Animal territory so she had parked and walked, a gun and two tazers at the ready. And there was V. Looking up into the night sky, in front of the coaster, like she was waiting. To get robbed or worse, for a sign from God, for a lightning bolt…
But Judy knew why V was here. They promised to be honest with one another, even if it hurt, and Judy knew that from the day she got back all V could think about was Johnny Silverhand’s smile, “real and kind,” she had called it, on this goddamn roller coaster. And Johnny Silverhand’s smile, “sad or soft,” as V had drifted away from the net and back into her body.
She was looking at the sky for something less knowable than God, less predictable than weather. She was looking for Johnny fucking Silverhand. Like she could summon him.
When Judy had made it to V, had placed a hand on her shoulder and spun her around, V had smiled for a second… and then she had looked… upset? Disappointed?
Whatever it was, it was a look you didn’t want from someone you might be in love with, someone you thought might be in love with you.
And it came to her almost every time she closed her eyes.
That had been months ago. It wasn’t the last time Judy would find V in some kind of haze, wandering somewhere dangerous, out of her mind and aching for someone else, someone dead.
Judy had her own list of dead lovers. More tangible than V’s, she had pointed out once.
“It’s not the same,” V had said softly, squeezing Judy’s hand before once again drifting away from her. “You can’t understand it.”
“I can’t. And if I could, I wouldn’t.”
So tonight Judy needed to be on the floor.
