Ooh Jackson steals the Jag please!!! 👀 👀
This takes place in the "Where You Belong" verse when Jackson is 16. It follows "Friday Night Frights" after he has to quit football due to his heart condition. He's angsty and pulling away from his parents and does something....really, really stupid.
I have yet to write the infamous "steals the jag" scene, but I have this from the buildup to it...
---
“You know that hood doesn’t make you invisible, mister,” Addison says as she watches her son try to duck it to the door. “I can still see you.”
Jackson scoffs. Even though Addison can’t see his face, she’s almost positive he’s rolling his eyes. “I wasn’t trying to be invisible.”
“Really?” Mark pipes up. He’s leaning against the counter, stirring creamer into his coffee. “Because you sure were moving fast there.”
Jackson scoffs yet again and lowers his hood. “I’m just in a hurry,” he says. “I have to get to school.”
“You need to eat some breakfast first.”
“I’m grabbing Dunkin with April and Alex. I’ll eat then.”
“And just how is Alex getting to Dunkin without a car?”
This time, Addison sees the eye roll. She does her best not to sigh. This has been a point of contention ever since Jackson got his license last month.
“You know it’s not even our rule,” Mark points out. “It’s the state law.”
“Yeah, but even when that’s over, you’re still not going to let me drive anyone.”
“I said we’ll talk about it and see how you’re doing.”
“Which is Dad speak for “not going to happen”.”
“Not even remotely true. But for the meantime, you’re not driving anyone. Which brings us back to my point…”
“April just past her probationary period,” Jackson interrupts. “Uncle Owen is fine with her driving him. Because he’s reasonable.”
“April is a pretty responsible driver. I’m glad she was able to prove herself. I’m sure when the 6 months are up, so will you.”
Addison silently praises her husband for not taking the bait. Over the past few weeks, their Sourpatch Kid has been more sour than sweet. There were a few back and forths in the beginning, with Jackson clearly looking for a fight. Addison had to remind her husband to pick his battles. Jackson is 16 now. Especially after losing football, he’s going through a phase. They can’t let him be disrespectful, but they also can’t feed into the jabs.
Jackson exhales sharply and continues to head for the door.
