recent oc development stuff

I haven't gotten sick in so long that now that I have a cold again I feel like I'm actually dying. I am barely containing Jesper levels of melodrama. Anyway. OC stuff.

--> OC name changes, possible project title

I learned that there's controversy behind the name "Coen" and I no longer feel comfortable using it (It's apparently an alt spelling of a name of high religious significance and a lot of Jewish people claim that any version is offensive to use. Going by the Dutch version doesn't work either because it'd be pronounced as a slur in English so... Yeah. Regardless of what's true I don't feel comfortable using a name with that sort of controversy attached to it).

...So I changed it! He's Silas now. Silas happens to mean "of the forest", which is perfect.

This change is for the best because it finally gave me something finite to base his species' naming conventions off of. Partha have hippie names, Fasa have names to my taste, and Raswa have gothic names.

(I don't know how to describe Fasa names, but I have my own set of rules for them. So far the best ones I've found have had Scottish, Persian, Dutch or English origins.)

A second name change that I'm in the "still considering" phase of is for Quinn Sterling. I still really like that name, however it's starting to feel more out of place the longer I work on this project. The new name I'm thinking about is Fenmore (It means "Dear Love", which feels perfect for him somehow) with Heath as a possible surname. I want his name to give soft flower field vibes, but at the same time have a slight uppity edge.

This design is outdated already because I fixed his mouseboy anatomy lol but I don't have anything more presentable. I need to go take medicine so the last thing for now: I finally have some ideas for the overall project title and for the world/landmass itself! It clicked with me a while ago that all my favorite OCs / the ones I focus on the most are different kinds of travelers, so I figured I should lean into that and base the project title off of it. My best idea so far is "Dear Drifter" - I like the word drifter because it can be associated with someone who wanders place to place but it also brings to mind daydreams and escapism so the title is sorta addressing myself and anyone else like me lol.

And for the landmass itself - world names are perhaps the number one thing that I really love on-the-nose names for. So how about I call it "The Hinterlands"? :P

This is a sketchy idea for the shape. I wanted the fae kingdom to have a crescent shaped area and then I thought oh shit what if I made the whole thing look like a night sky? I guess there's not much significance to that idea in terms of the themes but it's kinda neat I guess.

Okay. That's all. Medicine time. :3

I'm gonna start using this blog for reals pretty soon, 'cuz Art Fight is coming up and I just yesterday decided it would be great if i changed the biology behind every species of my OCs lollll.... It'll be a lot of work if I wanna finish my OCs' refs in time for Art Fight, but I think it could be fun!

I'll try to post some stuff as I go along! Not everything I say will end up as concrete lore unless I say that it is -- Expect this to be more like watching someone make a bunch of exploratory thumbnails (Although.... it would be super fun to eventually make info sheets. But that's neither here nor there!!).

The first species to get a rework will be Parthe, because I tried something new with Finlay and I'm in love a little bit. I used wrens as inspiration for him! And i have so many new ideas i could EXPLODE but I'll try to save that for later!!

Here he is, the boy! I'll talk about his design more when it's finalized. I think I'm going to experiment with giving him more feathers so that the transition between feathers and skin isn't so clear cut. Plus... his face looks a little empty in comparison to everything else. I want to preserve his freckles, but I might experiment with adding some wren-like markings to parts of him. :D

This is a pretty rough sketch of how their wings might look. My ocs used to have wings instead of arms, and then I moved the wings to their backs, and I tried so hard for 2 years to like how that looked but I just Do Not. I think attaching the wings to the arms is a pretty solid middle ground though. It'll make for some dynamic and interesting movement, and I'm hoping a lot of fun challenges to solve as well >:3
