2013 Rewind: Lumio
Image via WIRED
A new year has arrived! Happy 2014! But before I look ahead, I’m going to give a quick glimpse back to my favorite product of the past year: a lamp. But not just any lamp.
Lumio looks like a simple hardcover book. Not so fast. When opened, the “pages” glow to create mobile mood lighting that can travel with you around the house or outside. The accordion-like LED lamp glows for up to eight hours on a single charge via micro USB. It also comes equipped with built-in magnets so you can attach your Lumio to any metal surface. The best part? It’s sure to draw great reactions from everyone who opens it for the first time.
Order the $160 lamp on their website now and it will ship in February. Read what we wrote about Lumio last year over at WIRED. It was also featured at our WIRED Store 2013.

The Ultimate IT Girl Swiss Army Must-Haves
Image via WIRED Store
Between my apps and list-keeping techniques, I have myself covered for getting through my workday efficiently. But when it comes to getting stuff done around my apartment, I know I can trust in all 33 glorious implements on my Victorinox Swiss Army SwissChamp. These are just a few of the ones I can’t live without.
- Screwdriver: How often are you suddenly looking for a Phillips head to tighten a draw pull or crack into a battery box? Pretty often. I know that this baby is always in my purse for when I need it.
- Toothpick: I’ll probably never use this as it is actually intended—in public. But when I want to get funky with my manicure, the toothpick in the SwissChamp is pretty useful for positioning decals or swirling two colors of nail polish.
- Small-Blade: Blister packs just met their match.
- Pin: No more digging for a paperclip to pop out a SIM card.
- Wire Crimper: My favorite necklace happens to have a pretty shoddy clasp. I’m reaching for the wire crimper on my Swiss Army SwissChamp at least once a week to firm it back on and get on my way.

Track Your (Dog’s) Activity
Image via WIRED Store
Obsessed with tracking your own stats? Maybe it’s time to track your dog’s health too.
Just like any other of its kind, Whistle Activity Monitor tracks time spent walking and sleeping as well as how much progress has been made. Other features like “play” and “rest” paint a full picture of your dog’s health. All the data is stored on an app on your smartphone, and you can even share the reports with your vet. The stats are tracked live so it’s easy to keep tabs on when your dog walker showed up today while you’re at work. Just clip the $100 device on your dog’s collar and the fun begins.
Check it out at the WIRED Store.

A Thermostat That Knows What You Like
Image via Nest
Comfy indoor temperatures can be as personal as your coffee order, some like it warm, others cool, and some even hot. You might not ever win the interoffice thermostat battle, whether that means bringing a sweater to work on a 90-degree day or wearing a T-shirt in the middle of winter, but at home, you’re the boss. You can have the temperature just the way you like it. The Nest Learning Thermostat remembers what temperatures you like and even notices when you’re not home.
Instead of wasting money to heat an empty home while you’re away, it senses when you’ve been gone and turns down the heat. If you’re on your way home and want to warm the place up, give Nest a “ring” on your smartphone to let it. When you step through your front door, it’s like getting a big hug from your home. Joi Ito Relies on the Seiko Astron
Image via Seiko
As Seiko's Digital Gentleman-in-residence, Joi Ito's flight path takes him around the world a few times a month. That's a lot of time zone changes and a whole lot of jet lag. That's why this entrepreneur and Fortune 500 board member considers him a "Nowist:" someone who pushes technology to the very edge of now.
This is why Joi relies on the Seiko Astron—the first and only GPS solar watch in the world. Once an hour or on command, this globetrotting timepiece connects to a network of satellites, instantly calibrating itself to one of the 39 different time zones on Earth and taking all the guesswork out of those first moments after landing in your current destination. A powerful solar panel integrated into the Seiko Astron's elegantly designed face keeps the power reserve topped-up and ready for Joi's next trip around the world.
You can check out the Seiko Astron in person at the WIRED Store, now through December 22nd.
