Makoto sucked at school. No matter how much Tsubaki tutored her, she barely passed her tests.

Beastkin families are usually poor, and Makoto's was no exception. They didn't have much, but they loved each other very much and were very tightly-knit, so there wasn't much want for wealth.
Being the oldest child, a lot of Makoto's siblings probably had her hand-me-downs.
