Working through a stack of furniture this week, and starting with a "dirty prime" on each piece. Why prime? Well, occasionally you get a piece that is going to bleed through, no matter what. Certain woods have tannins (most notably cherry and mahogany) and unless you use a blocking agent, they'll bleed through any and every type of paint. Since I'm doing so many pieces this week, I'm cutting out the tannin stain headache and hitting everything with a stain blocking primer (typically containing shellac). Not only will it take care of one annoying variable, but a coat of primer makes it easier to envision a color. The hot mess trunk is about as done as it will get. It's still a hot mess, but a more purposeful hot mess. 😂 This trunk was neglected for decades and then sat in the shop for a year as it was. The metal isn't perfect, some of the intricate details are missing, and someone tried to paint it copper at one point but didn't finish the job leaving it splotchy and drippy. However, it's still a solid trunk, and the bigger the mess the more I tend to fall in love with something. It has character. 😉 I wanted to keep this makeover simple. I could have pulled the metal off and taken it down to the wood, but I would have lost the detail pieces in the proces because they're all so thin and fragile. I gave it a good scrubbing and one coat of Wise Owl Vintage Duck Egg chalk paint. Once it was dry to the touch, I scrubbed the paint back off of the metal pieces to allow the copper paint to come back through. Finally I went over everything with some Wise Owl salve. Easy peasy. This week, I'm focusing my attention on making some of the neglected pieces that have been sitting in the shop a bit more adoptable. Starting with trunks. This guy will be getting a bath this evening, and tomorrow will hit the grooming table. Now that we have a shop full of Wise Owl products, the options are limitless. Welcome Peggy Welcher, Wise Owl paint vendor, to the shop! Last summer Peggy was awesome enough to personally deliver a huge variety of Wise Owl products for me to use. I've desperately wanted to carry them in the shop, but I wasn't running out of anything she delivered (that's amazing coverage for you) so I hadn't had the chance to talk to her again. I recently allowed someone to borrow my Cling On!brush, and while we both were talking about being ruined for all other brushes, Peggy was messaging me about expanding to BV&CO.
