Our little fur babies, or familiars as some witches say, are the epitome of our lives. So much so that I always side-eye people who say they don’t like pets. Because who couldn’t love a sweet little cat or dog once they warm their way into your life?
Since we have established that our pets are basically members of our families (or our children) it’s safe to say that spells, and witchcraft are just as necessary for them as they are for any other family member, yourself included.
There are lots of ways you can (safely!) incorporate your pet into your magical practice. By doing protection charms on cats, to tarot readings for your puppy. But these are by far my favorite ways to include my little dog and two cats in my craft.
Let your cats in on your magical circles. I always feel like cats are half in and haft out anyway. So letting them walk all over my circle of protection whether it’s just a visualization of white light or an actual circle of ritual items never bothers me. I used to lock my self up in my room to keep them out, but cats are naturally attracted to magic and will come wherever the spirit energy is.
Reading tarot for pet insight. Of course tarot doesn’t ever take the place of a diagnosis of your pet from your veterinarian. But anytime I’m feeling like one of my pets is feeling off I try to get a good read on the situation. Usually I can tell if it’s just a mood, or if something bigger is going on, and they need to get seen by pulling a quick couple of cards.
Protection charms are where it’s at. My cats are both indoor cats but every once in a while, Olive, the more adventurous one will slip out. One time she stayed out all night and when we finally found her the next day her ear was ripped off on the top. Panicked I rushed her to the vet where they were able to give her some stitches and antibiotics. Ever since then I’ve always made a few charms here and there. An amethyst or herbs for protection in a little drawstring bag will do amazing things keeping your cats safe.
If you’ve lost your cat or dog you can petition a spell for their return. Take their favorite toy and tie to a tree outside. Picture a sort of beacon of light coming from the dog signaling your lost friend to find their way home. Leave it there and every time you walk by picture the beacon shining to bring your lost pet home. You can also ask the tree you tied it to for assistance in bringing your fur friend home. Make sure you leave an offering once your pet has safely returned.
Full moons, cleansing and crystals. Pets are a lot like us, sometimes they get overwhelmed, stressed or have a lot to process through. Especially for a pet that had been in a bad situation in the past. Although I never use herbs or incense around my pets, I have brought them outside for a quick walk around the block during the full moon to soak up good energy and cleanse any negativity from them. I have also cleansed with salt water bowls and crystals. Just place a bowl of salt water in the area (not where they can reach it to drink... tricky for cats) and dump the water out away from your home the next day.
One of the best things about having a pet is the unconditional love they have for you. No matter what happened that day, or what you went through our pets are always there for us no matter what. And sometimes that is the best magic.
Not witchcraft related, but I did a photoshoot with my Crested Gecko and a massive amethyst my mother gifted me 🔮
Adopted Pet Tarot Spread! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My first spread ever (comments and critiques welcome)! I was looking for a way to look deeper at the pet adoption journey. I recently adopted a wee cat, who has taken over my life in a very emotional way. This spread helps peel into our paths past, present, and future! Below are the questions I asked to create this spread, that correspond to the spread above.
1 - Who are you? Personality and characteristics of your pet. 2 - What do you need from me right now? 3 - What do I need from you? 4 - What will I teach you? 5 - What will you teach me? 6 - What is in your past? 7 - What is in our future?
My porch looks magical.
