(I am only reblogging this part because -- related to my earlier post -- Tumblr ALSO does not allow you to truncate posts from the top-down.)
Sadly, I am in the United States where everything is on fire 24/7 and nobody can seem to do anything about it. I think in only one state is employment not considered “at will”, meaning you can be fired for anything that isn’t protected by law (Race, religion, national origin, age (over 40), sex, pregnancy, familial status, disability, veteran status and genetic information.)
Which isn’t to say that employers don’t fire people for those reasons all the time, it’s just that they have to say something like, “No no, we fired you because we don’t like your shoes,” and then the onus is on the employee to prove that they were actually discriminated against.
Depending upon the industry, it can also be extremely difficult to unionize. Only vaguely related to this whole comment, but if you ever have a chance to watch the documentary American Factory, you really should. It’s pretty gutting and depressing. Which... yeah, I don’t know why I’m recommending you watch it.
Fun story: Last year some time my husband’s company went to all the employees over a specific age (I can’t remember, but it was either 50 or 55) and said to them, “Hey, if you quit we’ll give you a severance of a year’s salary. But if not, then no biggie I guess, right, haha!”
Remember, this was only done to people over a specific age threshold.
Lots of people left, because: 1. A year’s salary would give them a leg up on finding a new job and 2. The writing was clearly on the wall, and how much longer after they refused were they going to get shitcanned because the company “didn’t like their shoes”.
Mind you, none of this is to contradict the advice given here. You should absolutely fight back, and you should absolutely work with your coworkers whenever possible (although please, I beg you, make sure you’re “working” with the right people, because these sorts of working environments absolutely breed back-stabbing, and I have seen it first-hand)
But yeah. Everything’s on fire.
