10th March 1662, the second trial of the Bury St Edmunds witch trials. The preceding trial had taken place in 1645, instigated by the self proclaimed Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins, in which 18 people accused of Witchcraft were executed in a single day. The 1662 trial saw two elderly widows, Rose Cullender and Amy Denny (or Deny or Duny), accused of bewitching thirteen neighbourhood children between the ages of a few months to 18 years old, resulting in one death. Tried under the 1603 Witchcraft Act, the jury found them guilty of using malevolent witchcraft, and the judge sentenced them to death. The case would act as a powerful influence on the continuing persecution of witches in England during the 17th century, and similar persecutions in the American colonies, leading to the Salem Witch trials. The Bury St Edmunds case was cited by Cotton Mather, in his 1693 book ‘The Wonders of the Invisible World’. 11th March 1618, trial of accused ‘witches’, Margaret and Phillipa Flower in Lincoln England. They confessed that having been servants of the Earl of Rutland and when being dismissed they plotted their revenge, Margaret Flower stole a glove belonging to Henry Lord Rosse, Rutland’s heir, and gave it to her mother Joan Flower, who stroked her cat called Rutterkin with it, dipped it in boiling water, pricked it, and buried it. Later Lord Rosse fell ill and died. They further confessed that the devil came to them and they agreed to give their souls to have spirits like dogs, cats, and rats at their control, continued in the comments. #historygirls #womenshistorycircle #womenshistory #womeninhistory #witchcrafttrials #witchhunt #inquisition #witchcraft #witchesofig #witch #witches #witchywomen #witchythings #darkhistory #historyfacts #spookyhistory #discoverunder10k #historyblogger #witchcraftblog #witchyhistory #witchcrafthistory #historyofwitchcraft #vintagelooks #vintagelooking #historicscene #historicscenes #historicalstories #historicalstory #witchartist #witchartwork https://www.instagram.com/p/CMU6cdtnBMZ/?igshid=1kooj760is2yt
