Anonymous GM Zerg says Online tournaments dominated by Maphacking ring

An anonymous player identifying himself only as a 'consistent top GM zerg' with (online) tournament winnings earnings totaling 'over 2000 euros' posted on reddit today alleging most online tournaments are being won primarily by a group of map hackers.

Here's my response in that same reddit thead. Obviously, there is no way to know if this guy is legit or if he’s just trying to stir the esports anger pot, but I’ll take his bait for now in the hope that some real answers will come to light. Am the only one who is wildly pissed off about this? Where all the fucking esports journalists when you need them? I have reached out to him via PM for more information and will post if/when I hear back.

EDIT: I'm talking to this guy via PM now. I'm trying to get as much useful information as I can out of him without getting him into trouble.

I am a consistent top GM zerg player. I use a maphack to increase my performance. I have obtained good mechanics from very much practice to back it up but without my maphack, I am realistically a low GM or high masters.

Using my maphack, I have managed to win many online tournaments (earnings over €2000) and countless ladder games. I do not use it in a way that is blatant. Otherwise, I would have been caught a long time ago.

This post would be useless if I did not disclose how I used it.

The most direct benefit of my maphack comes from obtaining build order advantages. ZvZ, especially, has a very rock-paper-scissor start. With my maphack, I guarantee myself build order advantages and have a 90% win rate in ZvZ. I wouldI can react perfectly to what my opponents are doing. All-ins almost never catch me off guard. Fake pressure almost never causes me to overreact. Occasionally, I'll fail to interpret the information from my maphack or purposely disregard it (to not be suspicious) and end up losing.I have perfect engagements. I know where my enemy is at all times and can easily catch him out of position.I sacrifice my overlords through the path of my opponent's tech. I have my overlords or zerglings perfectly scout proxy buildings. No one suspects me because of this.

I know many other top GM players that maphack as well. Most of us are friends. The most successful of these that I know is a respected pro-gamer, on a team, that has won over €15,000 in prize money. Almost all of that money was won from online tournaments. Surprise, surprise, this guy has one of the most feared ZvZ in the world. To be honest, I am not sure how this person has remain uncaught. He refrains from attending LAN tournaments even though by now, he definitely has the resources to attend them. I think I've only seen him once in a LAN tournament.

I will never give out any names because these people are my friends. Personally, I would be happy to see hacks completely go away. However, as long as they exist, I will likely continue using them.

Though, I'll offer a few hints on how to catch some of us.

Just because you stream doesn't mean you don't maphack. Maphacks can be toggled on and off. A maphacker in top GM doesn't suddenly become shit just because he doesn't have a maphack.

Stream cheating is one of the most common excuses used by maphackers when questioned.

If a pro-gamer's wins are largely exclusive to online tournaments, it is very likely that he hacks. If we are to go after maphacks, it is best to topple the professionals that are using them. It will send a stronger message.

As far as I know, most top GMs and pro-gamers that use maphacks do not use the mechanics-boosting functions. I don't. It allows you to easily get caught."
