A weird pet peeve of mine that has absolutely no right to bother me as much as it does;
Woman in period film: spunky and “relateably” modern in her views of the rights of women and how society works and how she feels about love and marriage and sex etc etc
What is presumably intended: if we (the film makers) make her act like someone who actually lives in this time period she would seem weird and unlikeable
The actual effect (to me): we (the film makers) made her have absolutely no idea how to survive in her own society that she lived in her whole entire life in the social role that she was raised specifically and intensively for, so that literally every other character looks like they’re going weirdly out of their way to joyously remind her of shit she should already know and that she’s so dumb and out of touch she kind of deserves the harshness to “burst her bubble” that she wouldn’t have been in anyway, as though she wouldn’t have faced cruelty enough without...doing any of that
