The start of the Carretera Austral. What a horrible picture. But the sign is hidden and strangely placed and I wasn't in the best shape. I didn't actually start that day to be honest. I was supremely hungover and 10km further down the road I realised I had left my bank card in the atm. Nice.One.Nicholas. The following day I set out with a damn fantastic American couple (after arranging to meet my replacement card further down the road) and things were far more glory shaped. Almost constant rain and loads of laughing and suffering together. Amazing how company makes what would be a hellish situation rather damn pleasant! I was taken to this little spot of heaven whilst helping my campsite owner retrieve some wood that was cut for construction. Damn they have beautiful wood around these parts. I spent eleven days during the transition into this new year in his campsite as my left knee decided that I was in fact carrying too much stuff with me. (muchas cosas!) I became a master of doing sweet sweet nothing. A skill I feel I'm going to cherish for the rest of my days. After much sitting and resting I'm up and pedaling again and damn ecstatic to be on the road again after many emotions and loads of lows. Almost losing your current greatest joy is a troublesome experience! Be aware of what's making you smile and tell it how appreciative you are of it. Whether it's a human, an animal or a good sturdy wooden spoon. Appreciation keeps you humble, bitch. Don't let that shit slip. You meet some incredible people and some incredible scenery travelling. They have varying amounts of impact on you but there's always some form of impact. Snuck up on that fellow down there whilst approaching Volcán Yate, which is hiding in those there clouds. We had a smoke, a chat and a chuckle for a moment, and then continued on to our destinations for that day. And yes. He's wearing Wellingtons. Taken whilst hiking up to Hielo Azul, a refugio above El Bolsón. I like this place. I like this place alot. There was snow two days before I arrived in El Bolsón so the mountains were freshly dressed in their best. Such sweet hearts. I stayed at a vegan colony for two weeks recently - working and getting sick. An interesting combination. One of the dudes involved was going to drive to the Andes so we joined forces!!
