Witty Review #7: Trainplotting

Yes, I am indeed well aware it has been over a week again, I apologise but I’m really not used to the amount of time it takes to write one of these reviews, especially since lectures have now started, but alas I have returned, to bring the most sarcastic reviews, this time it’s T2 Trainspotting, since I’ve just finished it and it’s fresh on my mind so let’s continue. 

So as with the first film Trainspotting was directed by Danny Boyle and stars Ewan Mcgregor as Mark (Rent Boy), Ewan Bremner as Spud, Johnny Lee Miller as Simon (Sick Boy) and Robert Carlyle as Franco with some supporting characters but as with the first the plot mostly revolves around these 4 individuals.

Now being that this film was made in 2017 and the original was in 1996 there is a 20 year gap between the first and the second movies, which if you aren’t aware is told to you probably 5 minutes into the film. This movie however deals less with the 4 protagonists growing older and more with the consequences of their actions from the first film with a major theme of the film being regret. I mean I regret my life choices, I get jealous of my phone when it dies, but you can really feel it in the actors performances, especially obi wan on heroin, Ewan Mcgregor, he has always been a really talented actor and in this just with the first you get a sort of feeling the character enjoys what he’s doing but at the same time regrets every single part of it. 

there are 2 really special scenes in the movie though, which unlike the first don’t need a dead baby to be good. One is between Rent Boy and Veronika in a restaurant with the famous choose life quote but with a really really powerful spin put on it with Rent Boy audibly getting choked up and, the other scene is at the foot of the mountain between Simon and Mark where they both vent 20 years of frustrations at each other. 

The strengths are of course similar to any Danny Boyle film, the cinematography is fucking brilliant, the script and direction is on fucking point, you pay attention to this film and you will not get lost at all and you will really get invested into it and as with the first the 4 leads are so fucking good in their roles, Mark as the voice of reason, Simon as the dodgy businessman, Spud as the fucking idiot and Franco as a complete and utter fucking nutjob. 

The problems however are there despite how good it is, although it isn’t there for me, someone who maybe doesn’t have English as their first language or isn’t good at listening to fast speak won’t understand a single fucking word of what Franco says, he is so Scottish it actually hurts. Another being that if you haven’t seen the first Trainspotting this film, although it will make sense logically, won’t really be complete, you need to see the first and remember it in detail to fully grasp the film, although it does it’s best to explain it.

Overall however I would say that T2 Trainspotting is a very good movie, it is a victim of the sequel rule, not being as good as the original, although that is 20 years old and still fucking brilliant, and one of my favourite movies. So since Trainspotting to me is a 9, T2 comes in at a very reasonable 8 1/2, if you can watch both in order, it will really help enjoying it.
