Sunlight, At Last! Everyone Sparkle!
After waiting how many weeks for a Renfaire that was not held in the rain, I went to the CT Renaissance Fair in Lebanon, CT and my bf shot this video! It was worth it to see the light sparkle off the rhinestones (over 800 of them!) holographic sequins, and shisha mirrors. I have waited a long time to get this video! Enjoy!
One of the smaller (and simpler) motifs on the Wizard Umbrella. I think I will let this one be.
I finally finished the pin-fit of the canopy for the Wizard umbrella, and as you can see, it lies flat and smooth against the ribs. Although I serged the bottom edge to keep it from fraying as I work, I will wait before hemming it in case the applied decoration causes the fabric to tighten up.
The opening at the top for the point was too tight to try to fit under an sewing machine, so I stitched it down by hand, and added the golden beads to the stitches. Why waste the stitches!
Now to start planning the decoration! Beads, sequins, and rhinestones to come!
The wizard umbrella is 98% complete! Due to a friend wishing to go to a renfare this weekend, I had to work on it at almost every waking minute this week to get it completed! It is about one or two hours away from being finished. I also went in and started working on the wizard costume, which needs a big refurbishment, so I started adding sequins and rhinestones to replace the old beads that started to lose their luster. After all, I started making this costume in 1989! Unfortunately, it's raining right now. I wish that a camera could capture the sparkle of the rhinestones. But next weekend at the same faire it's wizard weekend, so I will probably be going then.
I started the blinging on my Wizard umbrella today. It is kind of hard to get a picture of reflecting light, so I may try to take some outdoors in sunlight. There are two shades of blues, plus silver and crystal, also in different sizes. There is an oval glitter piece at the start of the shooting star, but in the pic it blends into the surrounding fabric. There are no yellow rhinestones, so it is reflecting from somewhere.
I already glued down several shisha mirrors, but the glue for them needs 24 hours to cure, so I will start with the stitching around the shisha mirrors next. Still waiting for some sequins and more rhinestones to come in! A lot of this is totally freehand!

Doing what is called a 'pin-fitting' of the umbrella canopy inside out to make sure the seams will lie smoothly along the ribs. I need to take in the seams is mostly at the top where the curve is greatest, and a little bit at the bottom edges so that the panels will pull flat when you open the umbrella. Once everything is fitting I will serge the seams and then start designing the celestial decoration.

and that will take a bit of work because it will suck up a lot of rhinestones! Still, having a problem that the largest of the crystal rhinestones will not adhere to the fabric no matter whether I use my hot fix tool or my hot iron! I have had to result in using glue, trying to figure out how much is enough to hold the rhinestone in place without any oozing out when I press down on them. I did find out, however, that after a couple of hours, the glue turns to a jelly kind of consistency like rubber cement, and I can scrape the access off before it completely dries. Once this glue dries and cures, it is permanent!
I hope to have this completed by the end of May, so that I can use it when I go to renfares.
And what is johnthestitcher working on now? The fact is, I haven't been stitching in a long, long time (what with surgeries and all), so this will eventually become an umbrella to go with my Wizard costume. This is only the basis for it - I am buying rhinestones in colors to embellish it. I must have gotten this umbrella as a gift about 3 years ago, so it is high time I start on it.
