The badger was pleasantly surprised to find the grounds lightly dusted with snow as she stepped outside. That winter morning, her breaths hung around her face, a foggy evidence that she was alive and the badger smiled despite her cold, trembling bones as her mind slipped out of the present. Curiously, the chill that penetrated her wool cloak with ease was as familiar and comforting as an old friend come to visit. Winter, albeit freezing, gave her this enduring warmth of a spark in her soul that despair couldn’t seem to touch— the snow flakes, the white of the sky, it just made the fifth year happy.

Winter meant sparkling snow angels made with glee and laughter by children, warm blankets and snuggles, curling up with a mug of hot cocoa and reading your favourite book by a flickering firelight. Winter meant an excuse to get close to people, an excuse to borrow a particular boy’s sweater to never give it back and inhale his scent, and hold his hand because yours is “cold”. (Which of course, it is.) Winter meant creating a family of snow-men and riding in fairy-tale horse-drawn carriages and winter meant gifts to show your appreciation for everybody. 

In the brunette’s opinion, winter couldn’t have gotten much better.
