Cousins Rhonda and Will came to to visit this weekend. Will and I took a long ebike loop around Lake Lawtonka and through the wildlife refuge. We met up with the rest of the family in Medicine Park. We had Texas friends visit for a jeep ride, off trail hike, boulder hopping, fishing and dinner. They took off the top of the Jeep for a nice ride through the refuge and Medicine Park. We saw buffalo, lizards, snakes, longhorns, praire dogs and tons of wild flowers. We didn't catch any fish, so we went to the Meers Store for longhorn burgers. Some don't consider the longhorn as wildlife, but they have them at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. In the early 1900s, the true longhorn of Spanish origin began to disappear. In 1927, 20 cows, 3 bulls, 3 steers, and 4 calves were collected and sent to the Refuge. Some historical news reports say the Sooner State saved the true Longhorn and that the first UT mascot, Bevo, came from Oklahoma. Sounds good to me.
