‘‘ uhh --- excuse me? ’’ elena had always had a preference for smaller bookstores, the kinds where it was reasonable to hope that whoever she was asking for assistance knew what they were trying to sell and did not simply recommend the current bestsellers. ‘‘ i’ll be going on a short trip, and i was hoping to buy some books and some assistance would be lovely? i’ll be away only three days, so four books should be fine. ’’

‘ ‘ history does have a tragic tendency to repeat itself, ’ ’ auburn began as she stirred her drink with far more force than necessary. she did not add how she felt about it, the way her face looked as if she had bitten into a lemon the same way another might bite into an apple should illustrate things nicely. ‘ ‘ so here we go. again. maybe this time, there’ll be a better punchline. ’ ’
‘ ‘ so we meet again. ’ ’ theresia’s voice was upbeat as she clung to the box she was carrying and her face mirrored the smile in her voice. ‘ ‘ fate is once more working in mysterious ways. ’ ’

whether the sound of chiming bells or of brigid's ‘ ‘ hello ’ ’ was more vivacious would be a question for the philosophers; she was not seeking the answer for herself. her gaze swept over the room before it rested on the shop owner and she waved before stopping her approach to study some of the books that were on display while other customers paid for their wares. if there was one thing brigid had in abundance, it was time. this luxury was not shared by many.
picking up a handful of books --- the author was an old colleague, if memory served her well, and brigid was too curious for her own good --- and finally reaching the counter, she was smiling widely. ‘ ‘ hello, ’ ’ she greeted as she gently, gently set down the books and exhaled. gods, she loved bookstores. ‘ ‘ these four, please, and then i am the errand girl today --- not that i mind; compared to last week, this one feels positively abloom. ’ ’
