The way the ages are written in the WoF series has always confused me. I feel like it was never properly explain in the books.
Haha rant incoming
Hey Tui, what the fuck is up with your age system? I’ve looked through the books, through the qnas, and every age fact just pisses me off more
Let’s take a look at the first two books, the dragonets of destiny are still young and a year away from being adults. Oh wait no forgive me, they’re not a year away from being adults, they’re a year away from being full grown~ What a helpful term that’s not vague and confusing at all! What’s this? Fierceteeth’s winglet says NightWings move into the adult cave at 10? A different number than the pre established 7 for full grown? Makes 7 a bit of a weird number to pay attention to and translate to human if 10 is apparently the equivalent to becoming a legal adult.
Arc 2 and a few qnas disregard the 10 thing though. Winter Turning establishes 7 as adult, finally a main series book using the word adult, and it actually matches the pre established 7 number this time! Qnas back this up too, with multiple times Tui saying 4-7 is the teen years, which is cool. So 4 to 7 is like 13 to 18/19- Aaaand Tui mentioned one time that she saw the DoD, apparently at age 7 instead of their arc 1 6, as being somewhere between 14-16.
Which makes no fucking sense at all? Literally in the same qna she says the 4-7 is teens thing so in what world? Would 7 equate to 14-16? The source of this isn’t a direct quote so they could be mistaken on her referring to the 7 year old DoD as this age, but even then a 6 year old dragon being as young as 14 doesnt make sense either.
Thankfully that was only once, years ago, and has been repeatedly shot down by the many other and much more recent qnas reaffirming the 4-7 is teen year things. It’s safe to say 7 being adult is canon. Unfortunately the tidbit of “7 year old dragons being around 14-16″ remains on the wiki page right after the 4-7 thing to this day, and will continue to confuse fans and be picked out for gross ship arguments.
