Ok but I really really like that there are tiny little metal dragons that call themselves Sharpwings and are building themselves a tower and remember their Animus and their spell
Ok. Hermit a day May year two for me. By some miracle I managed to post something on time for every day last year. I do not expect the same this year since I'm going to attempt drawing instead of writing (There will probably be some writing too still) and I don't have a habit of drawing often at the moment like I did with writing. But we'll see.
All that said, I do have a plan...
Hermitcraft x Wings of Fire
...cause I only know how to draw dragons lol. And... and... dragons are cool...
So here's sharpwing Zed. He got caught messing with Tango. I'll show Tango's design on his day. He's totally not a shilouete cause I'm still so rusty at drawing or anything. Why would you say that...
Anyways, I have made Zedaph a sharpwing cause I think the mechanical little guys were a good fit. He's a great size for spying on the hermits and getting into the tight spots in his wild inventions.
He also has a bigger mech he's built and can pilot so he can be closer in size to the rest of the hermits. I think he probably just kind of possesses the mech rather than having controls inside or something. Details of how that works are to be figured out still.
As things tend to go with my brain "draw the hermits as dragons, one-off" has turned into "oh no another au wip". And I haven't locked down enough of it yet to sort out the tiny details like that. Still not even sure if I want this world to be more Minecraft like or more Wings of Fire like, or more of a mash up of the two. I really like my Minecraft world building... It's hard for me to get away from.
Anyways. One thing I have figured out about Zed's mech it that when he leaves it, it locks up and goes rigid. Much of the time he balances it properly so it just stands there, but sometimes it tips over (*cough cough Tango knocks it over *cough). And so naturally Zed, upon re-entering the mech must get up.
Now I cannot animate so I give you... Zed getting up in his mech.
I mean... just the whole body curling up like that at the start. The sporadic coordination. The very abrupt wake up. You cannot convince me he would move any more gracefully that an excited puppy. No matter that it's just an extension of himself, no matter how long he's had the mech and used it.
Clumsy puppy mech wearing sharpwing Zed. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
Listen ok I know the only reason Nineteen is called It/Its is because it's not organic but as your local It/Its Fanwing, I am in love with the not imposing She/Her or He/Him on the Sharpwings
Seriously it's been ages. Like at least three years since I read a book. Burnout fucking sucks, but I did it.
It was The Hybrid Prince from Wings of Fire and I liked it a lot so now I'm gonna have a ramble. Spoilers obviously.
First off Umber and Mulberry are adorable. I love that they both are a little bit hopelessly romantic. Umber's very awkward confession near the end was too cute and I love that Mulberry liked it. But I especially like that Platypus pointed out how fumbled it was at the end. I literally thanked her out loud for that one because my goodness Umber what was that.
I also just need to talk about Mulberry's powers for a second, cause I really like them as a concept. I was very excited cause, hey, cool new powers, that's fun. And then when we find out he's actually part nightwing too I had an oh duh moment of why I like them so much.
I've got this cool nightwing OC I traded for back on deviantart a while ago. I've drawn them a couple times (poorly) but haven't posted them anywhere yet. It's a really cool design that's full nightwing but they are bright golden yellow. And I came up with the idea they were hatched under a solar eclipse. And since there was a lot of light passing close to a moon (similar to a lot of light reflecting off a moon on a full moon night) they got some nightwing powers but a little off brand because eclipse instead of full moon.
I was going to alter mind reading into sensing and/or sharing emotions with other dragons around them.
So I'm not gonna say I called it, but there's something there. Also just amusing how long into the book it took me to remember that.
Also also Blob is there and that made me happy. And I love Nineteen a lot and Umber insisting on helping it. And that whole wildly roundabout conversation with the sharpwings. Like they clearly want to help and they can only do so much as their enchantment allows. I wonder what it's going to look like for them when they escape the island. Did Precipice add on anything to let them live on free after the barrier is broken?
Also the whole categories thing. I figured early on that Umber shouldn't have said 10. But it was worse than I thought. I'm nervous and excited to see how the number thing pans out for them in later books.
So many alsos but what else to say but also. 'King' Snakeroot being part nightwing. With him coming across more like a full leafwing I was under the impression he was a newer arrival to the island. But then the nightwing thing. Especially if that had to happen after the creation of the island prison cause he's a descendant of Queen Retribution (these names are so hard to remember there were so many new ones in this book).
Since all that was 3000 years ago and Darkstalker was 2000 years. Are they implying he's descended from Clearsight? But she wasn't part of the royal family I don't think. Would he even have enough nightwing in him to get prophecies at that point?
Or is he from some other nightwing more recently. If so who. Cause that means a nightwing would have had to escape the volcano, get all the way to Pantala at some point in between all that. And that feels like something that might have come up in the last arc in talking with the leafwings, but I don't think they ever mentioned meeting any other Pyrrhian dragons. But it's been a minute since I read that arc so I could be misremembering.
Or a nightwing had to go all the way south either with the tunnel or across the continent and decide to keep going and happen to find the island and meet a leafwing there.
In any case I'm excited to learn more about Snakeroot too. And I'm excited for more of the memory room. I love the glances into the past in this world and all the lore and world building that comes with it. And it gives me hope we could still learn more about the scorching someday. Cause I would love to know what that was all about
And on the descendants thing again with Beryl. She didn't appear to be part of the royal line in her time in that memory. I know that over 3000 years families get big. But I just thought that was interesting cause dragons seem really keen on keeping track of their royals. I wonder how far removed from the current royal line she really is. Don't think I need to comment much on Scarlet's marriage to Canyon then. That's royal families doing what they do at that point lol.
I also wonder how long they track dragons hybridness before they just call themselves wildwings. I know they said the wildwings were specifically descendants of the first prisoners but really how many tribes can you add to one dragon before you can't tell anymore. I like that they seem to have evolved their own kinds of thorny spikes too, that'll be fun to see people play with in designing the characters and more OCs and stuff.
And I wonder if the wildwings will get an entry in the dragon guide at the beginning of the next book and how that will be handled if they do since they seem so diverse.
Also the queens. I guess freeing them comes with freeing the prisoners too? cause of the prophecy? And that panic over Wasp getting out. I can't wait to see the fallout of all the queens vanishing. Wait also just realizing that means Wasp was still recognized as the queen of the hivewings even though she was locked up. I really need to reread the older books. Early on I used to reread all the book leading up to a new one coming out. And then at least just the ones in that arc leading up to the new one.
Really hoping I can do that since I read one (1) book again. Please let this be a momentum thing I can keep going.
Would also love to draw again so I can draw these guys cause I love them. But one battle at a time. Maybe I'll post some of my old art of them soon.
Anyways, whole book, I probably missed stuff there was so much fun stuff in this one. If you've actually read this far don't be scared to have a ramble back in a comment, tags, or reblog, whichever is most comfy for you. I'd love to talk about these books with someone. This is my favorite series. I've been following it since The Lost Heir came out back in 2013.
